Sam Lloyd Author Visit
Year 5 students welcomed author and scientist Dr Sam Lloyd, as a provocation for their Term 3 Science unit.
Through the book Alight, students were introduced to fire ecology and its role in Australian ecosystems. Students explored how fire helps regenerate nature and learned about fire management practices. Did you know important trees are ‘raked’ to prevent damage in planned burns? Or that eucalypts have a high density of epicormic buds beneath their thick bark which can rapidly sprout new shoots after events like fire or severe damage, enabling quick recovery? Our students do now.
Dr Lloyd’s visit provided a powerful introduction, inspiring curiosity about the environment and the importance of sustainable land care.
Thank you Ironside P&C - Non-Fiction Collection Development
We are thrilled to share that the first order of new non-fiction books has arrived in the library! We can't wait to get these vibrant, engaging resources into our students' hands to spark curiosity across a range of topics.
This collection development project was made possible thanks to the generous support of our P&C. Your contributions have directly enriched our library collection, ensuring our students have access to high-quality, up-to-date information texts that support both Version 9 of the Australian Curriculum and a culture of wide reading. To acknowledge this generosity, each book will feature a special bookplate inside the front cover.
These new resources will help students explore the world around them, build background knowledge for classroom learning, and discover new areas of interest. Thank you for helping us grow a library that inspires and informs every reader.
Our Book Week team is hard at work behind the scenes to bring reading adventures to Ironside in Week 10. Stay tuned in the coming weeks as we share more about a special incursion and exciting changes to our book week parade.
