What's On In 1/2

Footsteps:

Our Year 1/2 students have been thoroughly enjoying learning their dance for the upcoming Footsteps performance. With plenty of energy, smiles and enthusiasm, they have been practising new moves, developing coordination and working together as a team. We can’t wait to share their hard work and excitement with you at the performance!

Literacy Learning:

This term in Literacy, students explored new spelling concepts with a strong focus on phonics. We also investigated the fascinating origins of the names of our days and months. In reading, we learned how to visualise and use story maps to follow a story- an important

skill as we begin reading texts of increasing length and complexity. Our grammar lessons covered different sentence types and how to use them effectively. In writing, we explored narrative structures, using rich, descriptive language to bring characters and settings to life.

Mathematics:

This term, our Year 1/2 students began by revisiting their understanding of place value, as well as exploring concepts such as renaming and partitioning numbers. We have enjoyed putting our knowledge into practice through a range of hands-on activities, including our popular ‘Number of the Day’ investigations.

Alongside this, students have been learning to recognise and read the time on both analogue and digital clocks, something that would be great to practise at home too! They have also been developing their skills in following directions, using language such as leftrighthalf turn and quarter turn. A highlight has been using the Bee-Bots to put their directional skills to the test.

This week, we have moved into exploring multiplication through skip counting, repeated addition and arrays. Students have been working with a variety of materials, including number lines, coins and base 10 blocks, to develop their understanding.

Across all areas of Mathematics, we have been focusing on explaining our thinking and using reasoning to justify our answers.

In the coming weeks, we will move on to exploring division and sharing concepts. Students will use diagrams, physical and virtual materials, and their number knowledge to model and solve problems.

Grade 2 Sleepover:

Our Grade 1/2  teachers are busy behind the scenes working to prepare for our upcoming Grade 2 sleepover. Keep an eye out for more information in the coming weeks and be sure to mark Thursday 18 September in your calendars.
