YEAR 10 - SUBJECT SELECTION

Any students who are seeking a School-Based Apprenticeship or Traineeship (SBAT) in 2026 are encouraged to meet with Mrs Galvin throughout term 3. An SBAT is a pattern of study where a student combines a work component with Vocational Education and Training (VET) as part of their HSC study.

What is Vocational Education and Training?

Education and training that prepares individuals for specific jobs and careers. It focuses on practical skills and knowledge relevant to a particular industry or trade, often through hands-on experience and on-the-job training. VET programs can lead to nationally recognized qualifications, such as certificates, diplomas, and advanced diplomas, and can be a pathway to further education or employment.

VET courses offered at OCC:

  • Certificate II Construction Pathways
  • Certificate II Cookery (Hospitality)
  • Certificate II Agriculture (Primary Industries)
  • Certificate II Business Services
  • Certificate III in Fitness (Statement of Attainment) (NON-ATAR, No HSC Exam)

HSC Examination

The examination is independent of the competency-based assessment undertaken during the course and has no impact on the eligibility of a student to receive AQF qualifications. Regardless of whether you sit for the examination or not, the course will be reported on your HSC and a document will be issued showing the industry recognised training you have successfully completed.

Work Placement

Work placement Students in Industry Curriculum Framework courses must complete work placement of 70 hours.

TVET

Tafe-delivered Vocational Education Training (TVET) courses are delivered by TAFE or other external training providers that senior secondary school students may study while completing their HSC at school. TVET can be extremely valuable for particular students with specific vocational goals. It can be a ‘stepping stone’ to further study. The 2026 TVET Guide can be found here. Students who are intending to study a TVET course should choose “TAFE” in their subject selection form. Mrs Galvin will make contact with students who elect TAFE to commence the enrolment process. It is important for families to know that 16% of TVET fees are payable by families, 2026 fee information will be shared when it becomes available.
