What is Poetry? Students have been getting reacquainted with the different aspects and techniques used by poets, such as figurative language and sound devices! In Reader's workshop and Writing students have been analysing and critiquing different elements, forms and expressions used in poems.

What is figurative language? Figurative language is a way of using words to compare something to something else (beyond the literal meaning). Some common figures of speech used in poetry are similes, metaphors, idioms, alliteration, onomatopoeia, repetition and hyperbole.

By the end of this unit, students will be able to recognise and understand that poetry;

• Has a form of artistic expression and that different types of poetry have different structures.

• Is written in specific structure, every aspect of a poem has a purpose.

• Expresses and evokes different emotions by using sensory images.

We look forward to sharing our poems with you in the next newsletter!
