Mothers’ Day Mass

Don’t forget that the annual SPC Mothers’ Day Mass will take place at 8:30 AM on Friday 10 May at Rosehill Racecourse.

RSVP closes this Friday 3 May. We need to provide numbers to the venue so this deadline will not be extended – thanks for your understanding. Please reply and get tickets at - SPC Mothers' Day Mass Booking (RSVP) Form – noting it is $12 per adult.

Please read the details regarding booking and the event on the Humanitix site (link above).

More logistics and information will be provided in next week’s Especean.

At this stage we have only allowed grandmothers of Year 12 to attend, however, if there are still tickets available on Friday, all grandmothers from all year groups are able to get one. The deadline will still apply.

Friday Masses – Term 2

As always, everyone is warmly welcome at our Friday morning Masses. They commence at 8:10 AM in the Chapel.

This term each Mass will be led by a House. We would love to see as many boys as possible and families from the particular Houses, which unite us across the years, at their House Mass. However, please note that everyone is welcome at every Mass!

The first House Mass will be led by Rice House this Friday, as 5 May is the Feast of Blessed Edmund Rice, our founder. This Mass is significant for everyone in the community so let’s pack the chapel!!

Masses this term are led by:

  • Friday 3 May   – Rice House
  • Friday 10 May – NO morning Mass in the Chapel; Mothers’ Day Mass
  • Friday 17 May – Hanrahan House
  • Friday 24 May – Berg House (Solemnity of Our Lady Help of Christians)
  • Friday 31 May – Hickey House
  • Friday 7 June  – NO morning Mass; Founder’s Day for staff and students only
  • Friday 14 June – Crichton House

Justice in Action

The College is always open to opportunities to assist those on the margins in our world and where possible, offer assistance. Mr Andrew Viney, a true man of action, was requested by contacts in Papua New Guinea to provide some desks for some of the schools in the area of Kerema, in the “Gulf Province.” These Catholic schools are small with no real resources and cater for about 300 students. At the same time, timber company Tongue and Groove offered some excess wood flooring to be used for a project. In the interests of sustainable practice and global aid Mr Viney and Old Boy, Jake Costa, put together a prototype of what these desks could look like.

Therefore, in the second week of the holidays about twenty of our young men in Year 12 led by Mr Viney and assisted by Jake Costa, Mr Matthew Herro and Mr Stephen Cooper, spent a day making these desks, dismantling them and flat packing them to be placed in a shipping container that we will send over at the end of the term. The energy in the TAS workshops was electric and the pace increased as the day went on. All are to be congratulated for their work and for giving their time to make this dream a reality.

Ultimately, Mr Viney and his team prevented waste products going to landfill and have given students who ordinarily sit on dirt floors at school the opportunity to learn at a desk with a seat. This is what service is – not counting the costs but giving what you can for the common good. I was certainly impressed with what I saw and commend all involved!
