Secondary Year 11/12

11/12 VET PROGRAMS

ACTIVE VOLUNTEERING

The students enrolled in Certificate II Active Volunteering have been working hard as they accumulate their volunteer hours.

We had two main projects/events this term. We started with Clean Up Australia Day. The students walked from Concord School to Gresswell Forest and picked up any rubbish that was found along the way. While most of the neighbouring streets were nice and clean, the open areas have sadly turned into a bit of a dumping ground. The rubbish was collected, sorted, then the data was recorded. A final report was sent to Clean Up Australia.

Our second project was at the Watsonia Campus. The students restored the garden next to the Art Room. Over three weeks the students removed multiple bags full of debris and rubbish. The two garden beds and space between the pavers were full of weeds and grass which we removed. The original soil was aerated and then a fresh layer of soil was applied. The students planted lavender, succulents, geraniums, herbs, passionfruit, blueberries and other flowering plants. To finish the project, sugar cane mulch was spread out and the area was swept. We hope the younger students love their new garden!

Moving ahead we look forward to completing more of our units and gaining more experience as Active Volunteers 😊

COOKERY

Each Wednesday 14 students from year 11/12 have been participating in the VET Cookery program through Peter Lalor Secondary College. Students initially worked through Food Safety modules to ensure they were aware of all of the expectations and following hygiene expectations. Prior to sessions starting, students were fitted with proper chef uniforms. Most weeks we have cooked and it has been fantastic to see the maturity and independence develop. Students follow visual recipes after watching a demonstration from our instructor, Russell. Some of the most enjoyed dishes include Fish and Chips and Chicken Caesar salad.

CREATIVE INDUSTRIES

Creative Industries has been learning about sound and editing sound, they have created short radio scenes including background music and sound effects. They have also been writing and presenting short radio segments and using our Concord FM studio to present them. We recently visited ACMI to see the history of Australian film and TV industries, they all found it exciting and interesting.

SPORT AND RECREATION

This Term, the Sport and Recreation group have learned about maintaining sport, fitness and recreation industry knowledge. They also took part in CPR First Aid training in order to respond to emergency situations accordingly. We headed to Oz Tenpin Bowling Greensborough to practise hiring sporting equipment and enjoyed a tour of the MCG.

WORKSPLACE SKILLS

In VET Workplace Skills Certificate I and II, we have been learning about finding a job and how to apply for it. We have created resumes, emails and other business documents. We have explored digital technology and the functions of business technology. Students have also identified and continued to develop their employability skills. Our class also had the opportunity to set up and run the ‘Autumn/Mothers Stall this term, which was so much fun!.

CONSTRUCTION

Students are assessed on their ability to follow safe work practices, select required equipment and complete tasks to industry standards. Students have learnt how to hold manual tools correctly when measuring, cutting, chiselling and sanding. They participated in practical and written components of the program with appropriate guidance and support. These learnt practical skills have been applied in the construction of an extension lead rack and a guitar shaped CD stand.

ALLIED HEALTH

Speech Pathologist: Lauren Chan, Occupational Therapists: Jonathan Marshall and Viv Degran

This term we say thank you to OT Jonathan for all his support as he transitions to the Lower Primary Campus and we welcome OT Viv to the 11/12 team.

Across the term Lauren, Jonathan and Viv have been supporting VET Automotive and Cookery. It has been amazing seeing the students pull apart car engines, restoring them and putting it back together. An added bonus when the engine starts! In Cookery it has been nice to see the students’ skills translate from the basic cutting and cooking methods as they explore more complex recipes.

Across literacy the students are working on applying their Sounds-Write skills from 9/10 into their 11/12 project work - breaking a word down to its syllables, and then its meaning and how that applies to their life and the current unit of work. Electronically the students have enjoyed learning about the assistive technology available to build their independence with reading and writing to complete their work.
