Boys AFL

A very warm autumn day greeted the much-anticipated East Gippsland Boys Football competition against Nagle College on Tuesday 23rd April, at the Lucknow Football Oval. We had 3 very competitive teams sign up, with many local Junior / U17.5’s and Gippsland Power players involved on the day.

Coach- Mr Young

The Year 7 and Year 8 students started the day off with a noticeably more trained opponent making it hard to find our groove. Goals unfortunately came easily to Nagle, but our young Dragons never dropped their heads and just kept playing their hearts out for 4 quarters.

Coach-Mr Harrison

The Intermediate team played out an entertaining game, giving our talented boys a chance to run in the heat of the day. Creating many solid passages of play, and delivering us a contest with such potential, we just couldn’t seem to hit the scoreboard enough times to stay competitive.

Coach- Zach

The last game of the day saw us pitted against a very slick Nagle team, who we desperately wanted to get the win over for our College. The lads played a tough brand of football for their coach and represented the college guernsey with pride. Halftime saw us down by 4 goals, but within reach. A continuous tussle through the middle and back line broke us in the end for a reasonable defeat.

3 losses were not in our game plan, but behaviour was exemplary, and parents should be proud of the students who played their hearts out, on the day.

Special thanks go out to Finn, for his professional umpiring. It was greatly appreciated by all 3 teams. Well done!

Cross Country

It was so exciting to see so many students participating in the Cross Country on Wednesday 24th April. The John Butler Oval was abuzz, with students and staff cramming the event into their 5th session (apologies from Grant). Notably this event is a qualifier for district level competition at Lakes Entrance, 27th May, but it also served as great way for students to be actively engaged in creating school spirit through cheering and supporting one another’s efforts and achievements.

The 17-20 yo and 16 yo male age group headed off first on a 4km course around the swamp track 3 times followed by the oval 2 times and finishing in the middle of the oval through a very colourful finishing chute. The remainder of the female and male age-groups followed a similar course over 2.5km, and wow, there were some outstanding runs on the day.

From Ahren and Lola smashing it in the 12-13 yo group, Tanner and Adele for the 14 yo, Ayrton and Lara 15 yo, Will and Rita 16 yo, with Patrick and Juliette in the 17-20 yo section, completing the course with exceptional effort. Congratulations to all who have qualified for district Cross Country. We hope your training is regular, giving you the best chance to do your best at that event.

Thank you to all staff and House Captains who helped make the event possible, giving the kids a chance to compete.

Running and walking are great ways to stay fit at a low cost, but an even better way to clear the mind of the days worries and keep yourself positive. You can join others in some light jogging and walking, all the while socialising with friends and other like-minded students and staff, Wednesday lunch breaks on the John Butler Oval.

Girls AFL

The Junior Girls Footy team represented the College and themselves very maturely last Tuesday 30th April at the East Gippsland Junior Girls AFL Competition. Up against a very strong opponent in Nagle College, our team had to work really hard to get themselves into the game. With our centre field working hard to stay competitive throughout the day, unfortunately our backline saw way too much of the ball and we had to settle for a defeat at the end of the match. Well done team for never dropping your head, it is a sign of resilience when times are tough, just keep competing to the end. We will be stronger next year, Go Dragons!

Target shooting

The Yarra Valley School competition organised by Lilydale High School was held on Thursday 2nd May at the Melbourne Gun Club. It attracted 100 school students from all over Victoria. The event was comprised of 10 trap targets, 10 Skeet targets and 10 Sporting targets.  These are all different clay target disciplines creating a real challenge for competitors. The competition was single barrel only for each event. The Bairnsdale Secondary College was represented by Jack and Sara.

The weather was absolutely perfect, and the competition was fierce from the start. Jack shot a 10/10 in the Skeet event followed by a 6/10 in the Sporting and finished strong with a 9/10 in the Trap giving him a score of 25/30 which gave him second place in the Senior boys division. Sara shot a 7/10 in the Skeet event followed by a 7/10 in the Sporting and finished with a 5/10 in the Trap event giving her score of 19/30. This gave Sara second place in the Senior Girls division. Both students performed extremely well on the day in tough competition.
