Literacy
Students in Level 5 continue their analysis of our mentor text 'Wonder'. Through reading passages as a cohort per week, students are pulling apart passages to uncover meaning, text structure and language choice, implementing this into their writing. Spelling Mastery is becoming a favourite amongst the students, spelling a combination of words with ease and confidence. A new initiative referred to as 'Fluency Paired Reading', is a targeted approach in helping students improve oral reading fluency. We look forward to later in the Term where we hope to see students grow in their reading and comprehension.
Numeracy
The Mathematics focus for Level 5 over the last fortnight is around Decimals and Fractions. Students are finding and developing patterns in numbers, and practising strategies to solve and work out more challenging problems. Gamification of learning content is beginning to be a positive implementation for students and teachers. We have and will continue to focus on the four operations. Multiplication has been the focus initially. This will continue both at school and in the homework activities. This week we touched on short division. We will spend more time on both these over the comming weeks.
In numeracy, the Maths Games competition also started this week. This leads into the Maths Olympiad in year 6.
Inquiry
The Level 5's have been exploring body systems and how the things we put into our bodies affect the different systems. Wilko took us on a wild journey through the digestive system explaining how each part of the system did its job. The students were enthralled and disgusted in equal measure.
Wellbeing
We continue to explore character strengths, moving into the 'Zones of Regulation'. This provides students with the opportunity to regulate their emotions. Students are undertaking role-playing exercises, to understand how the different strengths are seen and how to identify them.
Sport
Interschool sport this week is playing against Sandringham Primary School. Please ensure students are at school and in their coaches' learning areas before 9 am.
The training schedule for Term 2 is below:
Coaches have also reached out for volunteers to accompany teams to and from the matches. Please contact your child's team coach or the office if you have a Working with Children Check (WWC) and are able to help out. If we are unable to get the helpers to attend, sadly SEPS will have to forfeit matches and cannot leave the school grounds.
Reminder: Can all student's laptops please be 100% charged before they come to school.
