Excursion - Melbourne Zoo

The Year 3/4 students will be attending a school excursion to the Melbourne Zoo this Term.

When: Friday 14th June, 2024

Where: Melbourne Zoo, Elliott Ave, Parkville VIC 3052

Please sign and complete the Operoo form, in order for your child to attend the excursion.

In this unit of inquiry, students have explored the interconnectedness of living things and the environment, focusing on how human actions can impact them. Through investigations, experiments, and discussions, students will develop an understanding of biological concepts such as life cycles, ecosystems, and the distinction between living and non-living things. They will also learn about Earth's rotation, surface changes, and how human activities contribute to environmental changes.

The Melbourne Zoo program will walk students through the lens of the seasonal calendar of the Kulin Nation, develop their understanding of the dependency between living things and their environment. They will take away skills to incorporate sustainable practices in

their own lives.

We require parent helpers for this excursion.

If you are a parent and are interested in attending the Zoo, please contact:

Olivia - otallarico@olgcdeepdene.catholic.edu.au

Please note: Your child must arrive at school by 8:50am as the bus will depart at 9:00am.

Literacy

In literacy, we have continued using mentor texts to unpack key themes and ideas from written texts. Using stories such as Voice of the Sea, When Nothing is Going Right, Go Left, and Those Shoes, students have explored the idea of change, wants vs needs and courage. We used these texts to look into the concept of direct speech, and descriptive language. Students engaged in an activity, where we had to write dialogue between characters without using the word ‘said’. This may be a great challenge at home for an engaging writing activity.

Mathematics

Currently students are unpacking the unit regarding fractions and decimals. A strong focus in mathematics, we have begun exploring equations and worded problems and how we can provide our reasoning and working out to support our answers. When engaging with mathematics at home, you can use questions to support students recording their working out. We have explored fractions, what they are and how to solve fractions using models and quantities. We will begin exploring equivalent fractions and representing these on a number alone.

Inquiry

Our inquiry unit this term has continued its exciting adventure. Studentshare unpacking biological science, the concept of change with living and nonliving things. We have begun looking at the life cycles of plants, and fruit trees and the similarities and differences between these and the life cycles of animals. We will then begin recording our observations we discover whilst planting and creating our own bean sprout pods.

On Wednesdays we have commenced our Passion Project and Board Games afternoons. Each alternating Wednesday afternoon, students will be working with others to engage in board games and developmental play. Everyother Wednesday, students will be working to complete their passion project. Students have decided upon the skills or area of ‘passion’ they will be working on this term.

Religion

This term in Religious Education we have continued exploring different celebrations in preparation for the sharing of sacraments next term. Engaging within our Eucharist unit, students are creating connections to their own lives, personal celebrations, and comparing and contrasting these to sacraments. We have explored symbols of sacraments, and created our own symbols to represent important celebrations in our own lives.
