Primary Years Programme (PYP) - Year 5

We're excited to share the latest from our Year 5 classrooms, where students have embarked on a journey of exploration and discovery as part of the Primary Years Programme (PYP).

This term, our Year 5 students will be exploring Australian history as part of their “Where We Are In Place and Time” Unit of Inquiry.

At the heart of their exploration this week was a provocation carefully designed by our Year 5 teachers. This learning experience invited our students to experience what a potential takeover of our school oval would feel like by a local neighbouring school. It served as a meaningful starting point for their examination of Australian history and the Indigenous Perspectives in our country’s history.

The impact of their learning journey is best expressed through the reflections of our students:

“First of all this is a bit frustrating because we can’t use our own oval. The fact that we can’t use our oval is overwhelming.” (Benji.K)

“I am not really the type of person who plays much sport on the oval but I have plenty of friends who play sport on the oval. I can feel their pain of not playing sports on the oval.” (Rafi .K)

“To Mr Cooper, I think it is not fair because we will not be able to use the oval, and our school will feel cramped. This is frustrating because I feel like they are going to take over our school.” (Emily R)

Through these reflections, we see the power of inquiry-based learning as it not only deepens knowledge but also fosters empathy, critical thinking, and cultural understanding.

We look forward to their learning journey over the next few weeks.
