If no questions spring to mind, why not ask your child whether they have any?

These prompts could be a good place to start:

  • Is there anything about exams you’re worried about in particular?
  • What would make you feel more supported in your studying?
  • Do you have any questions about what you can expect over the coming months?

Tales from the English Room with Mrs Packham and her Amazing Students

We are fast approaching the end of Term 2 and all the students have been very busy in English preparing for their assessments in week 10.

The Year 11s have been busy exploring the fascinating world of documentaries. Through viewing, discussion, and analysis, the students are developing an understanding of how filmmakers use visual and language techniques to present perspectives, influence audiences, and communicate important messages about real-world issues.

In Athlete A, the students examined issues surrounding athlete welfare, abuse of power, and the importance of speaking out against injustice. Through class discussions and analysis activities, they have considered how documentary techniques such as interviews, archival footage, and statistics are used to build credibility and shape audience responses.

Next week, they will begin viewing David Attenborough: A Life on Our Planet. This documentary explores humanity's impact on the environment and encourages audiences to consider how individuals, communities, and industries can contribute to a more sustainable future. Students will analyse how Attenborough uses personal experience, evidence, and powerful visual imagery to communicate his message and inspire change.

Year 12 students have begun their study of dystopian texts through The Maze Runner and The Hunger Games.

These texts have challenged students to think critically about the societies presented and the warnings they offer about our own world.

Throughout the unit, they have explored key dystopian conventions such as surveillance, propaganda, dehumanisation, abuse of power, and social inequality. By comparing the two texts, the students have examined how

authors and filmmakers use fictional worlds to comment on real-world issues and human behaviour.

They have participated in discussions, analytical writing tasks, and

comparative activities that encourage them to consider the question: What is each text warning us about? This focus has helped students develop a deeper understanding of how dystopian literature reflects contemporary concerns and encourages audiences to question the world around them.
