Grade 5 Junkyard beats incursion

On Tuesday the Grade 5’s had an incursion with Junkyard Beats. This was part of our learning about different ways to make art through our central idea: ‘People express ideas, beliefs and perspectives through different forms of communication’.

Students were shown a variety of different instruments made from pot lids, food containers, tins, water bottles and plastic lids. They were shown the oldest instrument in the world, their bodies, and participated in some whole-body percussion activities.

The Grade 5’s had a great time making music and being exposed to different more sustainable ways to make instruments and invent their own instruments from things that could be thrown away. They also learnt about single use containers and the problems that can arise from plastic bags and other rubbish being left in the environment.

In Junkyard beats, we learned that the oldest instrument in the world is your voice and body and it is called body percussion. -Ivana

In Junkyard beats we learned that we can be sustainable and also make music. We used buckets, bucket lids, plastic bags and drumsticks to make rhythmic patterns. -Jayani.

Junkyard beats was pretty fun, we made music using repurposed things and while we did that Kallista taught us that in this world we live there is too much rubbish chucked out and not enough music.- Audrey

Today Kallista from Junkyard beats came to WSPS. I liked it because it was fun and I learned a lot. We learned about single use bottles and bags. Did you know that a plastic single use bag takes 750 years to break down? -Max

I really liked this incursion because it showed a different form of art. I learnt that so many things that are not recyclable can be made into incredible things. It also showed me how different people express themselves. -Henry

In Junkyard beats we learned about instruments. We made beats with buckets and we learned we could reuse things to make instruments. I had a lot of fun. -Alex

This incursion has been an amazing experience, learning how to make the world a better place by collecting rubbish and making it into music. I loved every bit of it, from the loud noisy and chaotic area to the amazing sound of the birds tweeting in the quietness. -Leo

Junkyard beats was a great incursion! I learnt how to play the drums and that you can use anything to play and make an instrument. Kallista talked about how she and her band reused items that would have gone in the bin. -Grace.
