Grade 2 Excursion

Grade 2 excursion to Scienceworks
As part of our current unit of inquiry, Properties of materials affect the way they can be used, the Grade 2 cohort went on an excursion to Scienceworks.
Students safely observed the use of liquid nitrogen to explore the properties of solids, liquids and gases. There was an investigation about the changes of state, expansion and contraction by freezing bubbles, balloons, and even a rubber duck..
Here are some reflections and highlights.
When we went to Scienceworks we had snack first and then we went to explore. We went to the Sport exhibition. I watched people race. I saw a skeleton riding a bike above me and Benji.
Then we moved to the engineering exhibition and we built our own car on a screen.
After that we had lunch Intruder where you run away from the intruder and if you get captured and then we went back to Wales St Primary School.

On Friday all of the grade 2’s went to Scienceworks! I sat next to Piper. I talked and talked until we were finally there. I was happy.
Once we were there we ate snack, we put our bags in lockers and we went into a medium sized room and there was a lady that showed us what nitrogen peroxide and liquid nitrogen is.

My favourite bit at Scienceworks was making a future car, and when they tested the how fast you could run, I learnt when you put a solid in cold water it shrinks and when you put a solid in hot water it expands.

My favourite part of Scienceworks was the energy that you can build a future car that can go up on a big screen. I learnt that carbon dioxide is very cold that it can freeze a ballon.

On Friday grade 2 went on a bus to get to Scienceworks.
First at Scienceworks grade 2 watched a show about liquids, solids and gases.
Next we went to the sports exhibition. My favourite thing was racing my best friend Elsie and Cathy Freeman. I was so close to beating her and I did beat Elsie.
Finally but definitely not least we went to the engineering exhibition.
I loved it so much, it was so fun.

On Friday we went to Scienceworks on a bus. I was very excited on the bus you had to pick a partner to go with. My partner’s name was called Oliver.
It was about 50 minutes’ drive to Scienceworks. When we went down the stairs we had 6 minutes eating time.
Then we went to science experiments about turning liquid and gases turning into solids. She had an assistant called Ducky and he had a spa with bubbles.

On Friday the grade two’s went to Scienceworks. My favourite experiment was when we went to the energy lab. Did you know that you can turn a liquid into a gas?
If you put a solid into a very cold bowl of water for ten seconds you can take it out of it, you smash it with a hammer it will smash.
After we had snack we went to Sportsworks. There were a few activities, like footy. You had to kick the soft footy in to a hole.

At Scienceworks they did an explosion with a duck.
First the duck wanted a massage, so she got a hammer and banged it.
Then the duck wanted a bath, so she dropped the duck in.
But he wanted a bubble bath.
So, she put him in a bubble bath.
Then he wanted another massage and he broke.
