Year 6
Dear Grade 6 Families,
We have had a wonderful start to the term. Students have settled back into school well and have been working hard across all learning areas. Thank you for your continued support at home. We look forward to another exciting month of learning together.
This month, students have been learning how to make connections between texts and their own experiences to deepen their understanding. They have explored how authors create cohesive texts by using repetitive language and topic words. Students have also investigated figurative language, including similes and metaphors, and discussed how authors carefully choose words and images to help readers understand a text. They will use these text structures and language features to create their own texts.
Students have begun our Information Report unit. They have explored the purpose, structure and language features of information reports before brainstorming possible topics. Students have started researching their chosen topic and have begun writing the first draft of their information report.
In Mathematics, students have been exploring number patterns and investigating Pascal's Triangle to identify mathematical relationships. They have also applied patterns through coding activities and strengthened their understanding of the order of operations using the BEDMAS strategy. Towards the end of the month, students have begun learning about probability and chance by predicting and describing the likelihood of different events.
Our new Inquiry unit focuses on Civics and Citizenship. Students have started learning about democracy in Australia, how electoral systems work, and what it means to be an active citizen. Throughout the unit, they will explore how people can contribute to their communities and participate in decision-making.
This month, students have been learning strategies to lift their mood, identify and understand their emotions, and recognise when they need support. They have discussed different ways to ask for help and how to support others in a respectful and caring way.
We appreciate your continued support throughout the year. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact your child's classroom teacher.
We look forward to another fantastic month of learning with our Grade 6 students.
