Weather Wonders & A Special Guest!
Our Foundation students have turned into mini-meteorologists! We have started an exciting new unit exploring the weather in our world, and the children are showing fantastic curiosity.
🔍 What We Learnt Last Week
- Weather Tracking: We discovered different ways to find out the daily weather, from looking out the window to checking forecasts on TV or using the BOM application.
- Rain Cloud Experiment: We made a "rain cloud in a jar" using shaving foam and food dye to watch how clouds get heavy and create rain.
- Scientific Discovery: The students loved seeing the colourful "rain" burst through the foam cloud, helping them understand how real rain forms.
🚀 Special Visitor Next Friday!
- Expert Guest: We are thrilled to welcome Peter Degorski, Ada's dad from FS, to our STEAM classroom next Friday!
- Meteorologist Talk: Peter will be speaking to the students about his career as a meteorologist.
- Real-World Connections: The children will get a firsthand look at how real meteorologists track the weather and use science every single day.
Year 1/2
Learning About Our Resources
Our Year 1 and 2 students have been exploring natural resources and how we use them. Today, we looked closely at fossil fuels and discussed how mining coal can damage the environment, animals, and natural habitats.
To see these effects firsthand, students did a hands-on activity called "Cookie Mining". Each student received a chocolate chip cookie to represent a piece of land, and toothpicks to act as mining tools. Their goal was to extract the chocolate chips (the coal) from the cookie.
Through this activity, the students quickly discovered that it is impossible to get the "coal" out without breaking the rest of the cookie. It was a fantastic, visual way for them to understand how real-world mining can alter and destroy landscapes.
Year 5/6
The Year 5 and 6 students participated in the Bright Future Incursion, where they were introduced to a STEAM industry role model who shared insights into their rewarding career and the pathways that led them into the STEAM field.
Students engaged in a range of interactive activities that demonstrated how technology is used to solve real world problems.
