After the disappointment of the mass killing of the seedlings, the Environmental volunteers have worked hard in replacing these losses. Over the last few weeks, a large number of germinating native Lomandra’s have been transplanted into tube stocks.

When these grow larger, they will be planted around the school. These become a valuable habitat for the local animals as well as be used for weaving. Furthermore, a large number of other native seeds have been planted and over the winter, they should start to germinate.

On the 20th of May, many students graciously volunteered to participate in Clean Up Australia Day during the third and fifth period. All together, we managed to fill up 20 garbage bags as well as one chair and aided in restoring the school’s overall cleanliness.

During the last week of school, Environmental volunteers visited the local land care nursery. These students assisted with the transplanting of seedlings and well as the propagation of native cuttings. These trips provide a valuable link with the local community. During the visit, the school donated bags of shredded paper which come from the recycling collection.

Progress in the environmental council has been smooth; the recycling has been going well with more bottles being collected. In regards to the recycling initiative, the environmental council has introduced additional 10c bins to aid in the gathering of additional bottles. For May, 1106 containers were collected and $110.60 were donated to St Vinnies. Since the start of the program 13,586 containers have been collected, with $1,358 raised. This money goes towards the local food kitchen. The aim is for the school to reach the $2000 or 20,000 container mark. Let’s all get behind this cause.

Thank you once again for the ongoing support from the community, and we hope to continue making a difference in the world, starting here in our beloved school.
