As Term 2 draws to an end, the McCarthy Chess Club has had mixed results.

Coming back from a loss against Farrer, the McCarthy Chess club travelled up the road to Gunnedah where they played a series of games against Quirindi High School and St Mary’s Catholic College.

The McCarthy representative players won a comprehensive victory against Quirindi High School, winning 4 games to 0. On the same day, both our representative and prospective representative players played a series of games against St Mary’s. The developing representative players showed great skill and managed to win many of their games. This demonstrates great depth with the school team.

Last week, the McCarthy Chess players travelled to Armidale, where they played games against O’Connor Catholic College and Holy Trinity School. To continue the team's success, the representative team defeated O’Connor 3 games to 1. It ended up to be Holy Trinity’s day, as their representative team defeated our team 3 games to 1. Congratulations to the Holy Trinity's team.

With another game in Armidale to go at the end of Term 3, the McCarthy Chess team will rebuild and prepare for revenge when we meet them again. Our players are currently practicing every Friday, second break in J3 and anyone who would like to join the chess club are welcome.

Interesting Chess Fact:

There are more possible games of chess than total atoms in the observable universe. In 1950, mathematician Claude Shannon calculated “Shannon’s number,” which sums up to 10120 possible 40-move chess games. In comparison, there are 1080 atoms observable in the universe.
