Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander

Warraymaylaya Retreat:

From Monday, 18 May to Friday, 22 May 2026, our Year 10–12 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students participated in the Warraymaylaya Retreat in Sydney. The retreat, organised and facilitated by Jolene Faint, Subject Matter Expert – Aboriginal Education, Armidale Catholic Schools, provided a valuable opportunity for students to strengthen their connection to culture, explore future pathways, and further develop their leadership skills. Through Jolene's dedication, planning and commitment, students were able to engage in a meaningful and enriching program that encouraged them to build confidence, leadership capabilities and aspirations for the future.

Throughout the week, students participated in a range of workshops, cultural experiences and discussions focused on education, employment, leadership and self-determination. The retreat aligned closely with the Closing the Gap priorities by supporting stronger culture, educational engagement, employment opportunities, healthy lives, and safe and strong communities.

A highlight of the week was our visit to the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), where students toured the campus, explored student accommodation, learned about tertiary education pathways, and participated in hands-on workshops showcasing innovative 3D printing and engineering technologies. Students also participated in the Taronga Zoo Aboriginal Cultural Program, learning about traditional bush medicine and bush tucker while exploring a variety of career opportunities within conservation, education and animal care.

Year 10 students visited the Archibald Prize Exhibition and Catholic Schools NSW Head Office, where they engaged with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff and gained insight into future educational and career pathways. Year 11 and 12 students challenged themselves through the Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb, demonstrating courage, resilience and determination as they reached the summit together.

Students also visited Cronulla Sharks Stadium, explored the Sistine Chapel Exhibition, and confidently navigated Sydney's public transport network using trains and light rail throughout the week.

What stood out most was the way our students represented themselves, their families and our school community. They consistently demonstrated leadership, respect, responsibility and a willingness to embrace new experiences. Whether supporting one another, engaging with presenters, asking thoughtful questions or stepping outside their comfort zones, our students should be incredibly proud of the way they conducted themselves.

Warraymaylaya was a powerful reminder of the bright futures ahead of our young people. We are proud of the leadership they demonstrated throughout the retreat and look forward to seeing them continue to grow as strong, confident young leaders within their communities.

National Sorry Day and Reconciliation Week:

McCarthy Catholic College acknowledged National Sorry Day and Reconciliation Week through meaningful reflection and shared activities across our school community.

Students contributed to a commemorative Native Bush Hibiscus flower display, sharing words and messages centred on remembrance, healing, respect and reconciliation in acknowledgement of the Stolen Generations. It was wonderful to see students engage so thoughtfully and respectfully, taking the time to reflect on the importance of truth-telling, understanding and strengthening relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and the wider community.

We thank all students and staff who participated and helped make this a meaningful week of learning and reflection.

Cultural Activities - Term 2:

As Term 2 ends, we thank our community members for supporting our cultural programs.

Thank you to Aaliyah and Tayla for supporting the Girls Group and Dance Groups, Uncle Mark for didgeridoo with the boys group, and Loren from Winanga-Li for supporting Gamilaraay language.

We appreciate your ongoing support in strengthening culture, connection, and identity.
