HSIE:
This semester, the HISE department has had a fantastic experience integrating meaningful Indigenous experiences and perspectives into both our junior and senior curriculums. By connecting history, culture, and law, we’ve been able to bring these vital topics to life for our students.
Junior School: Year 10 Rights and Freedoms:
As part of the Year 10 Rights and Freedoms unit, several classes trialled an engaging 10-minute warm-up routine focused on local Indigenous language.
- The "You Yarning" App: McCarthy, researched and coded a brilliant custom language app. Styled like Dojo Lingo and titled "You Yarning," the app successfully expanded student exposure to 30 local Indigenous words and phrases.
Culture in Motion: We were also lucky enough to have Lisa visit our classrooms. She got students up and moving, blending physical activity with cultural storytelling to help them learn language and totems.
Senior School: Year 12 Legal Studies:
Up in the senior space, our Year 12 Legal Studies students have been focusing heavily on the critical topic of Indigenous rights in international law.
Exam-Ready Insights: Olivia provided the classes with the most current understanding surrounding the evolving Closing the Gap targets. This deep dive into contemporary policy gives our seniors the best possible opportunity to showcase sophisticated, current knowledge and impress their exam markers.
We are incredibly proud of how our students have embraced these learning opportunities with respect and enthusiasm this semester!

Vinnies:
On May 17th students from 9/10 Construction classes visited with residents and completed a project to sand back some Christmas lawn decorations. The students were enthusiastic and completed the task with great results. We look forward to visiting later in the year to complete the task by repainting them so they can be used at Christmas time.
Also, fresh from their eisteddfod season, the Concert Band entertained the residents on June 17th. They put on a very well received set and we thank the students and teachers Mr McNeil and Mr Thompson for their work in making this happen.
Vinnies have also been busy in the social justice aspect of our charter. Week 7 saw the return of Tacky Tracky Day alongside an inaugural Jacket Drive. Between these two events the group raised more than $500 which will go to the Vinnies Winter Appeal to help those in need. Left over jackets did not go to waste, they were donated afterwards to help people in need. It will be great to see this event grow year on year to increase the amount that we can contribute to this important cause.
A further social justice initiative has begun in partnership with a local charity, The Beacon Truck, to help offer a warm meal and company to people in our local community. An enthusiastic group took time out of their evening to both serve food and have a chat. This will be an on-going commitment and a big thank you goes to the students and staff who have so far taken up this initiative.
