Round 1 vs. Calrossy:
The campaign kicked off with a double-header against local rivals, Calrossy.
- The Boys: After a tense opening 15 minutes, McCarthy broke the deadlock and didn't look back. Fluid attacking play saw Remy Monk bag a fantastic hat-trick, with Ben Edgar also adding to the scoreboard. Final Score: 4-0 Win.
The Girls: Our girls showed immense grit and defensive hustle throughout a physical match. Despite creating numerous chances, a breakaway goal from Calrossy proved decisive. Final Score: 1-0 Loss.
A special thanks to Ms. Ratcliffe for her fantastic coaching and organisation of the girls' team. We know they will come back even stronger next year!
Round 2 vs. Carinya Christian School:
Heading into a challenging away fixture, the boys knew they needed to step up against a strong Carinya side.
Facing a vocal sideline of senior Carinya students, McCarthy kept their composure. Cooper Jones opened the scoring at the 10-minute mark, triggering an absolute offensive masterclass. The boys shared the wealth, with goals flowing from Ben Van Aanholt, Noah Grimley, Cooper Jones, James O’Leary, Remy Monk, Flynn Dodson, Ben Edgar, and Archie Pattison. Thank you to Savannah Brazier for volunteering as our assistant referee!
Final Score: 11-0 Win.
Round 3 vs. Oxley High School (Local “Grand Final”):
This was arguably the toughest test of the tournament against a historic powerhouse. Before kick-off, both teams observed a poignant minute’s silence for a close friend’s family, with our boys playing with heavy hearts and deep compassion.
The match was a tactical chess match. Midfielders Lachlan Roach and James O’Leary (Year 7) stood tall, physically matching opponents two years their senior. After a grueling, goalless first half, the breakthrough came 45 minutes in: a beautifully whipped corner found Ben Van Aanholt, who struck a sensational first-time volley into the net. McCarthy defended heroically against late pressure until the final whistle blew, sparking wild celebrations. This marks the first time in five years McCarthy has defeated Oxley in the competition!
Final Score: 1-0 Win.
Round 4 vs. Armidale Secondary College (Inter-Area Final):
With a spot in the National Top 32 on the line, nerves were high for our first major final.
Playing on home turf, McCarthy struck first when a midfield interception led to a perfectly weighted through-ball for Remy Monk to finish. Shortly after, a brilliant passage of play initiated by our Year 7 contingent set up Remy for his second. Armidale pulled one back off a deflected clearance, marking the first goal McCarthy conceded all tournament.
Leading 2-1 at the half, the boys doubled down. Cooper Jones found the bottom corner twice in ten minutes to put the game out of reach, securing regional glory.
Final Score: 4-1 Win.
Campaign Key Stats (Boys):
- Goals For: 20
- Goals Against: 1
- Clean Sheets: 3
Top Scorer (so far): Remy Monk (7 goals)
What's Next?:
The boys will travel to the Far North Coast early next term to compete for a coveted spot in the National Round of 16.
Expressing Our Gratitude:
A tournament run like this is impossible without a community. A massive thank you to the staff who drove the buses and coordinated logistics, and to the incredible families who came out to cheer, assist, and support the players every step of the way. Go McCarthy!
NSWCCC Hockey Championships: June 9th to 11th
MCC was proudly represented at the recent NSWCCC Championships in Taree, fielding both an Open and a Junior Girls team. Throughout the two-day tournament, both squads displayed exceptional talent, immense heart, and commendable determination on the field.
Open Girls:
The Open Girls faced a demanding schedule, contesting eight matches over the two days. In a hard-fought campaign, they narrowly missed out on the final medal rounds after a heartbreaking 1-0 defeat in the semi-final. The team showcased outstanding hockey, proving that speed, skill, and sheer effort are powerful assets in any tournament.
We would like to extend a special acknowledgment to our Year 12 students, who have now concluded their school hockey careers. Thank you for your dedication and leadership over the years:
- Sienna Fielder
- Anna George
- Paige Macmillan
- Sophie Myers
- Janina Willoughby
Junior Girls:
The Junior Championship featured a smaller pool, requiring a round-robin format where every team played one another. In a highly competitive field, MCC finished an impressive 3rd in the pool stages without conceding a single loss.
The team hit their stride in the finals, securing a confident win in the semi-finals before claiming a brilliant upset victory against St Clare’s Taree in the preliminary final. This earned them a spot in the grand final against the two-time defending champions, Trinity Catholic College Goulburn.
The grand final was an intensely close affair, concluding in a 1-1 deadlock at full-time. In the high-stakes extra-time period, MCC capitalised on a costly turnover by Goulburn. Kallee Bird seized the opportunity, breaking away to score the winning goal and securing a thrilling 2-1 victory for MCC.
Off the Field:
Beyond their athletic achievements, the students enjoyed an incredibly memorable trip. A highlight of the tour was the opportunity to meet three-time Olympian Matt Dawson where several students enthusiastically (and memorably) asked about his famous pre-Paris 2024 Olympic injury. The girls were also the life of the party during our team dinner, thoroughly entertaining everyone at Musical Bingo.
Ultimately, it was a highly successful three days filled with excellent hockey, wonderful team bonding, and historic wins. All students represented MCC with the utmost pride, sportsmanship, and spirit.
