Assistant Principal's Report
Since the start of Term 2, our college community has enjoyed a number of wonderful events and opportunities that have brought students, staff and families together.
Our Mother’s Day Breakfast was a particularly special occasion, and it was wonderful to see so many influential women and children gathered together in the Gillard Centre. The warmth and connection throughout the morning reflected the strong sense of community we value so highly at Melbourne Girls’ College. A sincere thank you to our Parents’ Association for organising and facilitating such a successful event.
This week, our school has acknowledged Reconciliation Week with the theme “All In”, alongside National Sorry Day on Tuesday. These important occasions provide opportunities for reflection, learning and continued commitment to reconciliation and understanding within our community.
Student leadership was also on display during the recent Leadership Conference held on Wednesday 13 May. Coordinated by our Senior School Executive and led by School Captains Nova, Annie and Anna, the conference centred around the theme “Own Your Future” in alignment with Careers Week. School leaders from Scotch College, Auburn High School, St Kevin’s College, Melbourne High School, MLC, Korowa Anglican Girls’ School, Pascoe Vale Girls College, Canterbury Girls Secondary College, Kew High School, Haileybury, Thornbury High School and Melbourne Girls Grammar attended, with approximately 85 students participating overall. Throughout the day, students collaborated on leadership scenarios, heard from past alumni speakers and shared initiatives from their own schools, creating a highly engaging and inspiring experience for all involved.
Our Athletics Carnival was another highlight of the term and provided a fantastic opportunity to connect with students across year levels. It was wonderful to see the enthusiasm and house spirit throughout the day, alongside quieter moments of connection with students enjoying Uno, picnics and reading between events. Congratulations to all students who participated, including the many students who achieved new records.
Finally, Music Camp at Urban Camp was a fantastic experience for our students as they prepared for the upcoming production. It was wonderful to see students so actively engaged in rehearsals, singing and orchestra activities while building their confidence and teamwork throughout the camp experience.
Looking forward, we are about to commence the Year 11 Semester One Exams and the Year 11 Formal. Students completing a Unit 3 and 4 subject will sit the GAT on 16 June, and Semester 2 will begin on 15 June.

Assistant Principal Years 11 & 12
Year 11
The past few weeks in Year 11 have been characterised by steady and consistent effort, with students fully engaged in their coursework and SAC preparation. While it may have been a quieter period without major events, it has been pleasing to see students settling into the expectations of Year 11 and beginning to develop more effective study habits. These are certainly taking shape, and we encourage students to continue refining and strengthening these habits as the year progresses.
As we approach the examination period next week, students are encouraged to maintain their preparation and make use of the supports available to them. Exams provide an important opportunity for students to consolidate their learning and reflect on their progress so far this year.
Following exams, we look forward to the Year 11 Formal, always a highlight of the year and a wonderful chance for students to celebrate together. It is a well-earned opportunity to mark the end of a busy semester.
We wish all Year 11 students the very best for their upcoming exams and look forward to a positive and productive start to Semester Two.

Year 12
Term 2 is always a big term in the life of a Year 12 student.
The end of Unit 3 is just around the corner, and our Year 12s are preparing for their final assessments of the semester with dedication and focus. It is lovely to see so many students making use of the Study Centre and canteen benches to create study groups with their classmates, helping everyone succeed in their VCE journey. Remember to speak to your teachers for advice and support as you make the transition to Unit 4, your final semester of high school!
The Year 12 jumpers have finally arrived, and the students look fantastic wearing them with pride. It’s been great to see them show school spirit and celebrate the milestone of their final year of school together. Some of the nicknames they selected were very clever!
The GAT (General Achievement Test) is coming up on 16 June and is a mandatory test for all students undertaking a Unit 3/4 subject. We will be outlining important information regarding the GAT at an upcoming assembly, and it’s crucial that all students attend. There will be a little sweet treat for all students on the day to keep them going during the six-hour test!
A reminder to families that accurate attendance records are essential and that MGC requires students to maintain an 85% attendance percentage to receive an S for each subject. Please check your child’s attendance on Compass and notify us of any discrepancies as soon as possible.
As we head into winter, it’s vital that students keep themselves physically and mentally well by maintaining a balance between school, part-time work and their social life, eating nourishing meals, prioritising physical activity for wellbeing, avoiding excessive screen time and aiming for consistent, sufficient sleep each night.
Keep up the great work, Year 12s!
