Year 9 & 10 Sub-School News

Assistant Principal's Report
As we reach the halfway point of the term it is an opportunity to reflect on the events and achievements of our Year 9 and 10 students so far.
Year 10 students attended their camp at Phillip Island and took part in all of the activities with enthusiasm. The weather was perfect and they were able to build relationships with each other while participating in some challenging activities.
Year 9 and 10 Outdoor Education students have explored the outdoors, Year 9 on a hike along the Great Ocean Road and Year 10 overcoming the cold at Mt Stirling.
The Year 9 and 10 students represented their year levels at the Athletics Carnival and many have progressed to the next round of competition.
The Course Counselling process will start soon and Year 10 students are preparing CVs for Mock Interviews as part of this learning. Year 10 students will also take part in their first formal exams at MGC later this term. Year 9 students will be undertaking interviews to unpack their Morrisby results, which will assist them with thinking about future pathways. We encourage students to speak to the adults in their lives about their careers and pathways as we enter the subject selection process for 2027.

Year 9
It has been a busy and rewarding term for our Year 9 students, with many opportunities for challenge and celebration.
A highlight of the term was the Year 9 Outdoor Education Camp along the Great Ocean Road. Students demonstrated outstanding resilience as they navigated the physical and mental challenges of the journey, while fully immersing themselves in the natural environment. It was wonderful to see students support one another and develop a deeper appreciation for the outdoors.
We also saw fantastic participation at the recent Athletics Carnival. Students embraced the day with enthusiasm, demonstrating great school spirit and a willingness to get involved. It was pleasing to see so many students encouraging one another and contributing positively to the overall atmosphere.
In addition, a number of students represented MGC at interschool sport this term. Their commitment, teamwork and sportsmanship are to be commended, and we are proud of the way they represented the College.
As we approach the end of Semester One, students will have the opportunity to request subject changes for Semester Two. This process will be open from Monday 1 June to Friday 19 June. This is also an excellent time to begin having conversations at home about future pathways. We encourage families to discuss interests and goals with their Year 9 students, particularly in relation to VCE and whether undertaking a Unit 1 and 2 subject next year may be a beneficial option.
Finally, it was a pleasure to see the Year 9 Dance class perform their routine at assembly. Their confidence and creativity were on full display, and they should be very proud of their efforts. We look forward to a positive and productive finish to the semester.

Year 10
One of the highlights of the term was the whole year level camp at the Phillip Island Adventure Resort. Students embraced the opportunity to leave their phones at home and connect with their peers outside the classroom while challenging themselves through a variety of outdoor activities. From team building exercises and T-shirt designs to adventurous pursuits, the camp fostered resilience, collaboration and independence. It was wonderful to see such strong participation and positive attitudes from all students. Phillip Island Resort and MGC staff all commented on the exemplary behaviour of all our students.
In addition to the whole cohort camp, two classes had the chance to attend the Mt Stirling Camp. This experience offered a more rugged and immersive outdoor environment, encouraging students to step outside their comfort zones and develop practical skills. Students demonstrated determination, cooperation and a willingness to support one another, making the experience both memorable and meaningful.
Our Year 10 students also took part in Mock Interviews, an invaluable opportunity to practise essential life and employability skills. Students prepared resumes and cover letters, and participated in realistic interview scenarios, gaining confidence in presenting themselves professionally. Feedback from interviewers, Rotary Club volunteers, highlighted the maturity, preparedness and potential of our students, which is something the school community can be very proud of.
Supporting student wellbeing remains a key priority. Three classes have already completed Youth Mental Health Training, equipping students with important knowledge and strategies to support their own mental health and to look out for their friends. This initiative contributes to a more supportive and informed school environment, and students engaged thoughtfully with the program. The remaining forms will complete the training shortly.
The recent Athletics Carnival was another fantastic showcase of Year 10 spirit. Students participated enthusiastically, whether competing on the track, in field events or supporting their peers. Their positive energy, teamwork and sportsmanship were outstanding, contributing greatly to the success of the day.
As we move towards Week 8, students are preparing for their upcoming exams. We encourage all students to maintain effective study habits, seek support where needed and approach this period with confidence and determination. It is an excellent opportunity for students to demonstrate their learning and continue building strong academic skills.
Overall, it has been a term marked by growth, engagement and enthusiasm. We are incredibly proud of the Year 10 students for the way they have embraced each opportunity and represented themselves and the school so positively.
