Year 7 & 8 Sub-School News

Assistant Principal's Report
On Tuesday 28 April Melbourne Girls' College held an open night for prospective parents and carers of students considering attending the college. This was a great opportunity to showcase everything that MGC has to offer and give an overview of what to expect on Orientation Day and during the Settling in Program at the start of 2027.
A special mention and thank you goes out to the following Year 7 students who spoke eloquently about their experiences to a very large audience: Isla Ahmed, Sadie Croker and Emiliana Casey from 7C2.
It was a pleasure attending the Dance night on Friday 22 May. Congratulations to all students in Year 7 and Year 8 who performed to a packed theatre. The performances were well choreographed and executed with precision!

Year 7
The MGC Athletics Carnival kicked off on 30 April and was incredibly well attended by the Year 7 cohort. The theme of the event was Blast From The Past, with students dressing accordingly in retro styles or their house colours. Well done to all students who got involved by entering events, dressing up and supporting one another.
Congratulations to Milana Farfaglia and Fiona Ryu for their standout performances across the middle-distance running events. Well done also to Francie O’Shea, the Year 7 Shot Put champion.
Each Year 7 Home Group class took part in the Organisational Olympics, using Class Dojo as an online platform to accrue points for positive actions. Students were tasked with improving their personal organisation, as well as supporting their peers, by completing the following actions:
- arriving to class on time with the correct materials
- leaving classrooms clean
- acting appropriately in class
- avoiding unnecessary trips back to lockers between classes
- locking their lockers properly
- keeping locker areas and lockers clean and organised
Students showed real improvement across the board, and it was a closely contested battle for ‘the best class’ right up until the end. Congratulations to everyone for making progress, and a special congratulations to the winning class, 7C2, who took out the win with a whopping 204 points!

Year 8
Year 8 students have made an outstanding start to Term 2, demonstrating enthusiasm, participation, and a willingness to step outside their comfort zones.
Our Open Night was a fantastic success, with special thanks to the Junior Ambassadors and the students who played a pivotal role in supporting the event. Their contributions provided valuable insight into school life and made the evening both engaging and informative for visiting families.
In Wellbeing, students participated in the Smashed incursion, an impactful and engaging educational performance focused on underage drinking. Smashed encouraged students to think critically and make informed decisions when faced with challenging situations. The session was highly engaging and sparked meaningful discussion among students.
Sport continues to be a highlight, with excellent attendance and participation in both Athletics and Cross Country. Congratulations to Chloe McGilton (8A), who was named Under 13 Age Champion, and Beatrix Macgregor (8E), who achieved Under 14 Age Champion, fantastic achievements!
The Learn to Row Program has also seen tremendous interest, with an impressive 120 Year 8 students signing up. Students have begun learning core rowing techniques, including stroke development, land-based training, and initial water experiences. It is exciting to see so many students embracing a new sport, with many expected to continue into the full program.
On 8 May, students in Years 8 (for their first time!) and 8 competed against Richmond High School:
- Rose Dyer - First Place
- Bonnie Demmler Macaulay - third place
- Clementine Moresi
- Phoebe Bowden
- Aven Collins
- Arianna Whitfield
It was a very tight competition and everyone should be very proud of their performances!
This year was my first time competing in a public speaking competition, and even though I was nervous, it was such a fun and exciting experience. Preparing took lots of practice, especially remembering parts of my speech, but it was worth it. Waiting for my turn and the results was a nerve-racking experience, but once I started speaking, I felt much more confident. Overall, I learned a lot, heard some really amazing speeches, and I’m really happy I took part. - Aven C
Overall, it has been a positive and energetic start to the term, with Year 8 students actively engaging in academic, wellbeing, and co-curricular opportunities.
