YEAR 10 WORK EXPERIENCE

💼 Exploring Future Careers Through Work Experience

During the week of Monday 4 May to Friday 8 May, Year 10 students who did not attend the Year 10 Central Australia Camp had the opportunity to participate in a week of Work Experience.

These placements allowed students to explore a variety of industries, develop practical workplace skills, and gain valuable insight into possible future career pathways.

Students were able to experience real workplace environments and learn directly from industry professionals.

Below are some reflections from students about their Work Experience placements and the valuable experiences they gained throughout the week.

“I did my work experience at Yea Machinery and I had an amazing time. I was able to learn important skills such as stock counting and more.

My highlight of the week was being able to play with the shop cat, Tinker.

Overall, if we ever had any more work experience opportunities, I would definitely go back. It hasn’t changed my plan for my future, but I am very grateful to have gone.”

“I participated in the Yarra Ranges Tech School (YRTS) Hospitality Program.  A highlight of the experience was seeing the final result of our group’s logo design for The Barnacle, a music-themed restaurant concept.

I gained skills in hospitality and feel more prepared to get a job in the industry, particularly in the near future.

I would also encourage other students to take part in work experience, as it is a great opportunity to learn new skills and explore future career pathways.”

“I completed my work experience at a record store in Northcote named Rathdowne Records.

I had many different highlights throughout the week, such as listening to all sorts of different music through the record player while I completed certain tasks, and also taking the owner’s dog, Tessa, on walks during my breaks.

I learnt quite a bit of information vital to record stores, including how to price certain records based on the condition of the album, and how to create social media posts to advertise the albums they have in store.

One of the most memorable records I saw was an AC/DC Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap album, which was priced at $375.

I think this experience has strengthened my interest in the arts and music a lot more than it was before.”

"For my work experience, I worked at the Yarra Ranges Tech School for two weeks, and I had a wonderful time. I learnt lots of time management skills, as well as being able to see what it is like to be in a workplace.

One of the highlights of my work experience was working with robot dogs. It was awesome to see how far technology has come.

Overall, I had a great time, and it was great to see what being in a workplace was like. I hope to go into similar work after high school."

"For my work experience week, I was helping out in class at Bimbadeen Heights Primary School.

I was with the Year 4s and honestly had such an amazing week. I did small jobs around the classroom and helped the kids whenever they needed it. It was amazing getting a feel for what it would be like to be a primary school teacher, as that is what I want to do when I finish high school.

It was lovely getting to know all of the students, and they didn’t want me to leave. The end of the week was so hard when they were all begging me to stay and come back next term."
