Ainger Peck Public Speaking Award

On the 13th of May, Alister Nunn and I took part in The Ainger Peck Public Speaking Award at Melbourne Girls College in Richmond. The Ainger Peck Public Speaking Award is a public speaking competition held by the Rotary Club of Richmond and is about harnessing the skill of effective and interesting speaking and communication skills. The competition promotes good communication skills and helps develop the art of public speaking.

My topic was on the importance of challenging beauty standards in the 21st century and Alister’s was why we should ban human cloning. Northcote may not have won anything, but we sure had a blast! So many speeches on the night were so exciting and inspiring I had no idea how the judges chose a top three.

The winning speech was on the importance of teachers. Her speech used the example of the Chinese science fiction author Cixin Liu’s short story, The Village Teacher, I swear it brought the whole room (of about 115 people) to tears, very well done and very deserving of first place.
