Celebrating the growth in our wonderful children on each learning level...
In English, Prep students have been learning about pollution, with a special focus on water pollution. This week, we read the book Ducks Overboard!, which is based on a real event where thousands of toy ducks were accidentally dumped into the ocean. Each student was given a small plastic duck to take care of during our English lessons. One day, the ducks even went “missing” around the classroom! Students had lots of fun finding their ducks and writing about where they discovered them. During another English lesson, students imagined where their ducks might have travelled around the world and wrote creative stories about their adventures.

In Humanities, the Year 1 students have been learning about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people's histories and cultures. We learned about Ellsy, a proud Wakka Wakka girl, who celebrates bunya nut season with her community in Kabi Kabi country. She explained how they collected bunya nuts and held community challenges using them (including shucking, storing and cooking). The Year 1's then used balls and hoops to recreate the storing challenge! We also read a story by Aunty Mary Wise, who was born in a town near the Darling River and Murray River. Her people are the Barkindji and Ngiyampaa people, and they fished along the rivers for food. The Year 1's, then went to Kirrip Park and tried using the natural resources to build their own canoe and test it's floating capacity. See some of our creations below!

This week, our Year 2 students have been writing opinion pieces. They have learnt that the goal of this genre of writing is to make the reader agree with their opinion. They were inspired by the book 'The Day the Crayons Quit'. To demonstrate their skills in opinion writing, our students wrote a letter to their favourite crayon to persuade them not to quit. Hopefully, their skills in persuasion will do the trick!

Year 3 students had a wonderful time at the Ultimate Frisbee Gala Day at Fawkner Park on Friday. After learning and practising frisbee skills in PE this term, the gala day was a great chance for students to put their teamwork, throwing and catching into action. They enjoyed being active in the fresh air, playing friendly matches and spending time with classmates from across the year level. We were especially proud of how students encouraged one another, included everyone and demonstrated great sportsmanship throughout the day. Their positive attitude and enthusiasm made the event a real highlight.

This term in Science, Year 4 students have been learning about heat and how it moves from one object to another through conduction, convection and radiation. To explore this, they conducted an experiment using cups of hot water and spoons made of wood, plastic and metal to test which material is the best conductor of heat. They discovered that metal transfers heat the fastest, while wood and plastic do not conduct heat as well. Students enjoyed predicting, observing and drawing conclusions as they explored the fascinating world of heat transfer.

On Wednesday, the Year 5 students eagerly participated in an in-visit called the 'Parliament Process'. This revised the key aspects of government and democracy which they have been learning about in humanities lessons this term. The students engaged in interactive activities, such as debates, voting and learning about the roles of parliamentarians and the process of passing laws. They developed a deeper understanding of how decisions are made in the country and the importance of active citizenship. The session allowed for critical thinking and teamwork, as students worked together to understand the challenges and responsibilities of governing.

During this semester, the Year 6 teachers have been extremely impressed with the way students have played with one another during recess and lunch. Students have made the most of their final term as a cohort, playing soccer, chatting with friends, drawing and more!
Among the large part of the cohort that plays soccer, we have seen outstanding sportsmanship, demonstrating fairness, respect, and teamwork on the field. It has been wonderful to see everyone including others, playing by the rules, and encouraging their teammates.
Another highlight has been how well students have managed any disagreements or challenges that have come up during play time. There have been very few issues brought to teachers for resolution, as students have been able to communicate respectfully, solve problems independently, and ensure that everyone is having fun. We are so proud of the way our students demonstrate our school values outside of the classroom. Keep up the great work, legends!
