VET at Ranges TEC

What is VET?

VET (Vocational Education and Training) subjects can be a fun and exciting subject for students to include in their Year 10, VCE and VCE Vocational Major (VCE VM) programs (they are compulsory for VCE VM). Students often find that a VET subject gives them a chance to have a break from the usual classroom environment and engage in learning in a more hands-on and active way. Students including VET as part of their MECS program, generally attend Ranges TEC for one afternoon a week whilst doing the rest of their subjects at MECS.

VET subjects are typically completed over two years. Upon successful completion of the course students will receive an accredited Certificate II or pre-apprenticeship qualification

In addition, students will receive the following credit towards their VCE or VCE VM:

  • First Year = VCE or VCE VM Unit 1&2 (i.e. a Year 11 subject)
  • Second Year = VCE or VCE VM Unit 3&4 (i.e. a Year 12 subject)

VET subjects also count towards a student's ATAR if they are doing the VCE. If students commence a VET course in Year 10, they are actually fast-tracking a VCE subject.

Students at MECS doing VET courses at Ranges TEC will have their fees heavily subsidised (fees are fully covered if part of the VCE VM in Year 11 and 12).

Applications are currently open for students to attend a VET course next year.

Contact Amelia Koole (VET and Careers Coordinator), if you are interested in your child undertaking a VET course.

What’s happening at Ranges TEC?

We’ve had a great few weeks at Ranges TEC! Our Year 10 students are wrapping up their Trade Tasters and will soon be choosing electives, focusing on the trades they’d like to pursue next year.

It was fantastic to host lots of students and families at our VET Taster Night, where each trade teacher ran a short activity for students to experience what each trade offers.

VET Cookery have kicked off their ‘Restaurant Nights’. This is a part of the second year program where students create a three-course meal and invite friends and family to enjoy what they’ve prepared. Students get to be the head chef, delegating tasks to classmates and presenting the menu to guests. It’s a great opportunity to experience the real-world pressure of the hospitality industry and prepares them well for the ‘heat’ of the kitchen.

Alex, our Cookery teacher, ran the first Restaurant Night to set the scene. (see photos above)
