Science & Scripture Conference

Year 11 ISCAST Incursion

Year 11s explored Big Questions at the Science and Scripture Conference.

Are we monkeys? How old is the earth? Can you be a scientist but also hold the Bible as the authoritative word of God? These were just some of the big questions our Year 11s tackled at the Science and Scripture Conference last week.

On Thursday 7 August, five guest speakers from ISCAST (Christianity and Science in Conversation) joined us to explore how science and faith interact. Each brought their own expertise, making for a day full of fascinating ideas and discussion. Students were given the opportunity to choose two out of the five available workshops, allowing them to focus on the topics that most interested or challenged them.

Dr Andrew Brown helped us dig into, Interpreting OT Creation Narratives workshop, looking at how Genesis 1 and 2 fit together and how they compare to other ancient creation stories. Gil Brown then took us deep into How Old is the Earth?, sharing geological evidence and exploring the debates around dating methods.

Rev. Dr Chris Mulherin asked us to think about What is Science? Can it Get Along with Christianity?, showing how history, philosophy, and faith all shape our view of the world. Dr Sarah Wilson answered the tricky Are We Monkeys? question, unpacking what evolution really means and how it fits (or doesn’t) with the biblical view of humans as made in God’s image.

Finally, Eden Saunders brought the universe into focus with What is the Big Bang Theory and Can it Involve God?, exploring whether God could be the author of such an event and how that lines up with Genesis.

By the end of the day, our heads were full, our questions were sharper, and we left with a deeper appreciation for the study of both science and scripture. A big thank you to all our speakers for challenging and inspiring us!
