Certificate II Animal Care

There are 6 Leighland students who attend St Brendan-Shaw College (SBSC) to participate in this entry level qualification for working with animals in an industrial environment. This is a 2-year course which is now available locally, rather than online as we have done for the past 15 years. It allows students to engage in regular practical activities, alongside the required theory which most students really appreciate.

St Brendan-Shaw College have established themselves as an RTO, and they have a new purpose built workshop to facilitate the course. Practical activities include field trips to local wildlife parks and zoos, and plenty of animal contact. We partner with SBSC to provide VET Animal Care for interested students who attend their campus each Thursday.

Construction Skill Set

Together with SBSC, Leighland have entered into a partnership arrangement with TasBGAS in Fieldings Way (just around the corner from our school) for budding builders to engage in hands on learning to become 'work ready' for employment in the Construction industry. Students complete 8 units toward Certificate II in Construction, and they enjoy being able to learn by application. This year, 1 student - Dexter, expressed interest in construction. He has worked alongside SBSC students to complete his course. If you want to know more, ask Dexter - he has found the course very engaging and rewarding. I visited last week to check out their house project.

Certificate II in Agriculture

This year, we have partnered with the Yolla District School to be able to offer Ryan a Certificate II in Agriculture, which he is absolutely enjoying! Ryan has attended the Yolla District School for two days each week to participate in practical learning in a farm school environment, to complete a full certificate qualification which aligns with his interest and future employment aspirations. Ryan recently took me on a tour and collected the eggs from the chickens enroute. He showed me where he has been involved in drenching, cattle care and herding, as well as repairing fencing amongst a range of other essential farming skills. We were able to collect some eggs from the chicken roosts enroute.

Work Experience

During 21-25 July, Year 10 students had the opportunity to experience work in an industry of interest to assist with future pathway decision-making. Placements were arranged in partnership with parents so that access to work was both achievable and well attended. Of the cohort of 79 Year 10 students, 45 engaged with work placement during this time. Those who have not yet attended work experience will be able to do so during the last week of Term 3 between 22-26 September (Round 2).

Visiting host employers and students during the week, once again confirmed the value of the Year 10 Work Experience Program and the  important role it has in Careers Education.

A big thank you to our business community for providing placements. Our students were very well received and catered for throughout the week!
