Our school delivered the annual program, Teen Mental Health First Aid for Year 10s.TMHFA is designed specifically for teenagers aged 15-18 (Years 10-12).It aimed to teach teens how to recognise when things aren’t going right with one of your friends, and how to help them out.
In the Teen Mental Health First Aid course, Year 10s were taught this 5 step framework to supporting a friend who might be experiencing a mental health problem or a mental health crisis. Students were taught the importance of connecting their friend in with a safe and trusted adult if/when they become worried about a friends mental health and were resourced with a whole range of community supports they could seek advice and guidance from such a Kids Helpline (ph. 1800 55 1800) or Lifeline ph. 13 11 14.
To support the roll out of the Teen Mental Health First Aid course, several RHS Staff members completed the Youth Mental Health First Aid course, which is a course that equips adults who teach, care for, or support young people with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to recognise, understand and respond to a young person experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis.
