Parental Considerations for Supporting Stage 6 Subject Choices

A child embarks on their Stage 6 journey, having already selected their senior subjects, it’s an exciting time filled with new opportunities and challenges.

Here are five essential considerations to keep in mind as you support your child through this stage:

  1. Student Interest and Passion
  • Encourage your child to reflect on the subjects they enjoy and are genuinely passionate about. A strong interest can foster greater engagement, motivation, and improved performance.
  1. Academic Ability and Strengths
  • Assess your child’s strengths and weaknesses across different subjects. Choosing subjects that align with their academic capabilities can enhance confidence and success.
  1. Future Goals and Career Aspirations
  • Discuss your child's future aspirations and potential career paths. Some subjects may be prerequisites for specific university courses or vocational training, making it essential to align subject choices with these goals.
  1. Workload and Time Management
  • Consider the overall workload and balance of subjects. Some may require more time and effort, so it's important to help your child evaluate their ability to manage their time effectively and avoid feeling overwhelmed.
  1. Advice from Educators and Mentors
  • Encourage your child to seek guidance from teachers, career advisers, and mentors. These professionals can provide valuable insights into subject choices and their relevance to future opportunities.

However, it is important to acknowledge that the Higher School Certificate (HSC) may not be the right path for every student, and academic pressures can increase significantly. Some students may find that transitioning to TAFE, vocational courses, apprenticeships, or traineeships better suits their aspirations and learning styles.

Remember, supporting your child’s educational journey is a joint effort that involves collaboration among students, teachers, and parents. Everyday counts and developing good habits in preparation for the coming year will set the foundation for success.

Additionally, our upcoming session on our Growth Goal Setting Initiative on the 12th of September will continue with Guest Speaker Mona Shindy speaking to the students about her career in STEM orientated fields within the armed forces.

We look forward to seeing you at the Parent Teacher Interviews that are happening Wednesday 10th September. You can book in appointments with teacher's via the Sentral app.
