Daily 5 - Read to self (with whisper phones)
Earlier in the year we introduced the Preps to the Daily 5, which is a literacy framework which is used throughout the school.
The 'Read to Self' component is just what it sounds like, during this time the Preps each have their own book, they sit alone and read independently. While this may seem pretty straightforward as adults, it is a little more challenging for Preps. The Preps need time to get used to becoming independent readers and it takes practice to build up extended reading stamina.
The Preps are really enjoying using their ‘whisper phones’ to help them ’Read to Self’. The phone amplifies the sound, helping children hear the sounds and words they’re saying. Whisper phones can also help to improve phonemic awareness and comprehension of reading material.
Literacy- Word Work
The Prep students have been enjoying word work activities to help them consolidate and revise our words of the week. They have been participating in activities where they make words using Play-Doh, Lego bricks, ink stamps, letter blocks and magnetic letters.
They have also experienced writing the words on windows, on their whiteboards and with chalk on the concrete outside. These are all great ways of practising writing and spelling words at home too!
