100 Days of Prep Celebrations

Alphington Grammar Chess Tournament

On Tuesday 30 July, nine students from Years 4 and 6 travelled to Alphington Grammar and competed in the Interschool Zonal open chess tournament.

We had a wonderful day playing chess with students from 9 different schools across Melbourne. There were 7 rounds in total, and every one of our nine competitors collected at least one win, which is a fantastic achievement.

Overall we had some tremendous results with one student, Lucas, finishing with 5.5 points and winning the silver medal for second place overall, as well as qualifying for the Boys State semi-finals. Heidi and Kierstin, were awarded the gold and silver medals in the girls competition respectively. This also sees them qualify for the Girls State final later this year. Eve Torzillo was awarded the bronze medal in the girls competition as well.

In the school’s standings, our team from Alphington Primary School managed to clinch third overall.

As a spectator on the day, what stood out beyond our results was the positive team spirit and sportspersonship that was shown by all.

Well done team!

Chess Club

As a reminder to all families and students, Chess Club casual sessions are back in Term 3!

So if your child is interested in playing chess with friends or with someone new, this is the place for them. Chess Club caters for all abilities and experiences and anyone is welcome to come along and enjoy a game.

Chess Club takes place on Mondays at lunch time after the second bell, on Level 2 of the Learning Centre.

There’s no obligation for students to come every week, it’s as advertised, casual. Students can come as often as they like.

If you or child have any questions about getting involved in chess,

Reminder - Prep & Year 1 Junior School Concert

The Colour Monster

Prep and Year 1 students have begun excitedly rehearsing this Term for their School Concert, The Colour Monster to be held at the Renaissance Theatre at Kew High School on Wednesday, 4th September at 7pm.

The concert is truly a celebration of our vibrant Arts learning this year in Music, Drama, Dance and Visual Arts, and the students cannot wait to share this with you all! The theme for our Concert, based on a book by the same name, embraces the many varied emotions that we experience and the ways that we learn to regulate these at school and at home. Students have been involved in all aspects of the performance including script writing, choreography, song choice and T shirt creation and design.

Further details for parents will follow via a Compass post and updates in the newsletter later in the term. Tickets will also be on sale closer to the date.

Please direct any questions to me at Christy.Fulcher@education.com.au

Looking forward to seeing you all there!

Reminder - Year 4 News - Cereal Fundraiser

Keep bringing boxes of Cereal in for the Year 4 Fundraiser.

Reminder - Year 6 - Indoor Games Action Team

Hi APS,

We are the Indoor Games Action team and we have created a Gym Club where year levels can play in the gym at lunch times on Tuesday.

First we need your help! Along with running fun physical activities for year levels we would like to provide sideline activities for people who might like different games.

For our sideline activities we are kindly asking for donations such as board and card games. There will be a donation box at the front office. We are hoping to collect donations over the next 3 weeks so we can start our club in week 4.

We will also be sending a google form out to teachers to gather data about what types of active games year levels would like us to run. For example basketball, netball, tiggy and dodgeball.

Thank you for your support. We are looking forward to starting Gym Club in week 4!

Kind regards,

Year 6 Action Team - Anika, Olivia, Matt W and Liam
