Comments from our School Captains - Principal's Day

On the 5th of August 2024, my fellow School Captains and I were invited to a meeting with our School Principal and Vice Principals. They told us about what each of them do and how they run each meeting. Towards the end of the meeting, they let us participate in their next task. The task was to organise a Literacy program they could implement for the Foundation-Year 2 students.

I learnt that principals do a lot more work behind the scenes than you think.

Thank you to Mrs King (Principal), Ms Scott (Assistant Principal), Mrs Antonopoulos (Assistant Principal) and also to Mrs Rogers (Leading Teacher) for this great opportunity to see a day in the life of a principal.

Joining the Principle's Day meeting, I learnt a lot of new things that I previously didn't know. I learnt how Leadership helps with Wellbeing and Teaching and Learning.

On Monday the 5th of August, the school captains were invited to a meeting with Mrs King, Ms Scott, Mrs Antonopoulos and Mrs Rogers. At first I was nervous but the teachers were very welcoming and I wasn't scared after all. We talked about the roles that they have and how they use those roles to make our school a better place. We also talked about more interesting and important information. I had an fantastic time and would love to do this again.

On Tuesday, the 16th of August the School Captains joined a meeting with the Leadership staff of DPW- Mrs Rogers, Mrs Antonopoulos, Mrs King and Ms Scott. In the duration of the meeting, we discussed a variety of topics involving our duties as school captains and leaders, whilst zoning in on the idea of having the best educational environment for students especially around Maths. We talked about how math pre-tests and post-tests were issued and planned and how the questions were determined based on the amount of students who go them wrong previously, as well as some questions that are above level and challenging in general to gauge the performance of students most effectively.

Though the focus was on maths, we also briefly discussed the structure in which the lower primary students should learn to read and write by doing daily reading and phonics exercises. By keeping the amount of study consistent every day, we can more easily ensure steady improvement and have children get used to daily reading. Altogether, the meeting was highly informative and gave gave us a better understanding of the logistics of being a teacher and planner at our school.
