Year 4 Newsletter
Dear parents,
What a fun day we all had at our school's annual Walkathon. The banners were bright and the chants were cheerful. Thank you to all the families for your support and assistance to make the event great.
Congratulations to all the wonderful students who participated in the district athletics on Tuesday. We are super proud of your efforts.
Pyjamarama is happening on Tuesday, 6th August 2024.
That’s when students choose to stay in their pyjamas and wear them all day at school. Remember that they will need to keep warm, and must be safe. This means closed in footwear that doesn’t slip is a must. It’s ok to wear their usual school shoes with pjs. If your child would prefer to wear your uniform instead of pyjamas that is fine too. The JSC is hoping to raise funds for the Smith Family Foundation so please bring a gold coin donation. To further raise funds the JSC are also running a ‘guess how many lollies in the jar’ contest. There will be a prep to 2 jar and a 2 to 6 jar (the jars will be taken around to classrooms during the day). A gold coin donation is also required to enter. Winners get to keep it.
What's happened in year 4 this week?
English: This week we have planned and started to write a newspaper report. We used the structure: headline, lead, body and tail to create an article. Our reading comprehension strategy for this week was Fact or Opinion, this integrated nicely with our writing focus. In spelling this week we looked at the prefix sub and super.
Maths – This week in maths we have had a continued focus on assisting students to develop efficient mental and written strategies for solving problems involving multiplication and division. We have also reintroduced students to the Multiplication algorithm. Our weekly measurement rotations where they will be using tools and strategies to investigate, compare and convert measurements of length, mass, volume and capacity continued.
Inquiry - This week in our Inquiry lessons we identified and described the regions in Australia and Asia where major food or fibre plants and animals are grown or bred. We also examined the concept of sustainability as it applies to farming, and explored links between sustainable farming and food security.
Inquiry Resource request:
We are asking that students begin collecting and keeping any shoe size cardboard boxes or large pieces of cardboard. We will be using this for our upcoming Design and Technology lessons where we will be designing and constructing nesting and resting homes for our local wildlife. Could they please stay at home until week 7 (Monday 28th August).
Wellbeing - This week we looked at using self calming techniques and how they can help when we may feel angry.
Homework - In term 3, homework will again consist of:
- Minimum 4 nights reading with at least 80 minutes per week recorded in school diary (Book title, pages read, minutes read).
- Diary is to be brought to school each FRIDAY signed by parents.
- Mathletics tasks will be set weekly to support topics in the classroom.
