Australian Mathematics Competition Dates
A number of students from Year 3 to Year 6 have been selected to participate in The Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC). The test will be conducted in Week 4, commencing Tuesday 6th August. A make-up session, for students who are absent, will be scheduled on Wednesday 7th August.
The AMC is Australia’s most well-known and longest-running mathematics competition for students, offering a unique opportunity for participants to showcase their mathematical skills and problem-solving capabilities.
Spanning topics from basic arithmetic to advanced algebra, geometry, statistics and probability, the competition is crafted each year by leading educators and academics.
If your child has been selected to be part of the competition, they will bring home a STUDENT PARTICIPATION AND PRIVACY CONSENT FORM this week.
This form needs to be completed and returned to school by Friday, 2nd August, 2024.

Volunteer Induction Session
Our next session will be held on Friday the 7th of August 2024 starting at 9:15am.
Please contact the office if you would like to attend.
Should you wish to volunteer at any time during the school year, you must complete a Volunteer Induction Session. It is a requirement of the Victorian Education Department, that any volunteer be inducted into the school.
There are many ways that you can volunteer at our school. Some possible ways could include:
- Assisting with the preparation and supervision of our breakfast club program (we are definitely in need of someone to volunteer for this!)
- Assisting with supervision of students during excursions or special events
- Assisting with preparation of whole school events
- Assisting with our specialist programs, such as Art, PE and the library
- Working in classrooms, with small groups of students e.g. reading a story, playing learning games, publishing writing
- Facilitating or assisting with a lunchtime club e.g. gardening, art, sport, science, etc
You will need to have a current Working With Children Check (the form to apply for one is available from the Post Office or online) and complete the school induction program annually (every year).
The induction program covers information around the Victorian Child Safe Standards, Occupational Health & Safety and a familiarization tour of the school.
The Victorian Department of Education states:
Volunteers should be inducted, trained and supervised according to the school’s procedures for staff or volunteer induction and management. This includes being familiar with school level procedures for identifying and reporting suspected child abuse.
If you have any further questions, please contact the school office.

Preschool Storytime
PLEASE NOTE THE NEW DAY- now held on Wednesday's
Storytimeis a literacy-based program that can help prepare pre-school aged children for learning by developing their listening, speaking, and pre-reading skills. There is a focus on developing important social skills including the sharing of resources, as well as the activities specifically designed to improve the fine-motor skills of young children. Storytime sessions are held at Deer Park West Primary School each week on Wednesday afternoons.
What to expect in a typical Storytime session:
On arrival, children will have an opportunity to work on various puzzles or construction tasks, or to sit & share a book or two with their parent or guardian.
We will then come together as a group to listen to a story that will be read-aloud to the children by one of our experienced teachers - Mrs. Sharon McLeod.
Each Storytime session will include a paper-craft or drawing activity for the children to complete, based on the book that was shared that week. If you have a preschool aged child with a sibling at Deer Park West Primary School or if you know someone who is planning to enrol a child at DPWPS to start in Foundation in 2025, we invite them to come along and join in the fun!
