PE

Over the past two weeks students from Prep to year 2 have continued to develop their skills in soccer. They have been encouraged to pass and dribble with the inside of their foot, rather than kicking with their toe, which can be inaccurate. The students skills have improved significantly and their confidence has grown immensely which has been pleasing to see.

The year 3 to 6 students have continued to participate in NFL flags. For the majority of students it is a very new sport as there isn’t much exposure in Australia, however all the students have really liked learning about the sport and the key skills, including throwing and catching a different type of ball. The roll of the quarterback, centre – who snaps the ball and the receiver. Students have worked on passing to a partner standing still and then passing to a partner on the run. They have also had a go at running the ball and much more.

It is a fantastic, quick and fun sport that students have thoroughly enjoyed.

Kingston Division Girls Teeball

Last week our successful teeball girls competed at the Kingston Division gala day. There were two pools of three teams with the top team from each pool playing in the grand final to try and advance through to regionals.

Our girls were amazing, their team work, encouragement and sportsmanship was great and they cheered each other on as well as recognising good efforts from the opposition.

Game 1, we won 23-5, game two we won 15 to 1 which saw us go through to the grand final play off.

It was a tense start to the game, but we quickly realised that we were going to win and the girls were amazing, winning the grand final 21-1.

This now sees us go through to regionals on Monday 12th August, down at Mornington Baseball club. The girls are very excited and we wish them all the best for the day.

Well done girls, we are all so very proud of you all.

Kingston District Basketball

Last Monday a number of year 5 and 6 students played in the Kingston District Basketball competition at Springers Leisure Centre. It was always going to be a tough day and none of our girls play in basketball outside of school and only a small number of boys play. With most other schools having the majority play outside of school. However, with this in mind the goal of the day was to have lots of fun and support each other.

Both the boys and girls teams tried really hard and supported each other well.

Between the boys and girls teams we played 14 games and only won 1 game, but they all had a great day and it is pleasing to see them all trying their best.

Culture Studies

Last week in Culture Studies, we acknowledged and discussed how the Olympics includes countries from all over the world and how their cultures all come together, giving people the opportunity to celebrate the values, meaning and diversity that sport and culture have in common.  We discussed how the Olympic games represent the spirit of sportsmanship on a global scale, where all Athletes are competing not only for victory, but also to celebrate the values of the Olympics which are excellence, respect and friendship. This demonstrates a mutual understanding of friendship, unity and fair play. The Olympics shows cultural awareness through kindness and compassion giving us a deeper understanding and appreciation of the world’s diversity. We also acknowledged and discussed how the Olympic rings symbolises countries and cultures coming together. Each year levels made and created something to represent the Olympic rings. Foundation students created paper Olympic ring eyeglasses and Olympic ring art by using dry pastels, round paper and their finger to smudge out the pastel to create the rings in their colours. Year 1/2 students made their own paper Olympic rings by joining paper rings together, they also made one big class chain with the rings. Year 3/4 students created Olympic ring art by using dry pastels, round paper and their finger to smudge out the pastel to create the rings in their colours. Year 5/6 students made origami Olympic rings, where they interlocked together. Year 3 to 6 students also chose one countries flag that is represented in the Olympics which they drew using paint pens on either a tile, bottle top or a rock.

Visual Arts

This week in Visual Arts, Foundation students learnt how to do printmaking. They created a jelly fish and a fish print by painting a mat then using a Q-Tip to draw a jelly fish and fish, placing a piece of paper over the paint & their drawing which then created a jelly fish and print. Year 1/2 students continued to work on their African animal fur prints. Where they used their friends print, once dried they cut out their animal print and glued it on some backing paper, ready for display. Year 3/4 students, continued to work on their sea animal printmaking, where they made their print on their chosen Sealife animal. Once dried they cut around their animal shape, placing back and front together, stapled them together while stuffing plastic bags to create a sea animal paper pillow. Year 5/6 students continued to work on and finish their African animal silhouette art piece. They began to work on their coral reef diorama by painting their wooden frame, ready for next week so they can start to create and add coral and sea life with modelling clay and other materials.
