Amazing 5/6

What have we been up to?

It has been a hectic and chaotic start to Term 3, with the students trying to settle into their routines while participating and competing in a number of extra-curricular activities. It has been pleasing to see the positive attitude that the students are approaching each activity with and we as teachers are attempting to support this positivity with a renewed focus on the 7 Habits, particularly how to positively interact with one another, take responsibility for their actions and support their friends through trying situations. This focus has been incorporated into our daily routine.

Le Page students went to Springers Leisure Centre and competed in the annual basketball tournament. Despite many of the students having never played any form of competitive basketball before, they all conducted themselves positively and I was proud of the sportsmanship they showed. The girls got 1 win in their final game and unfortunately while competitive, the boys failed to register a win for the day. There were a number of students who displayed some significant potential and I would happily encourage them that if they enjoyed the day, they should look to join a local team and build up their skills.

Our World-Beating Girls Tee-Ball team are off to the Regionals after easily sweeping their Divisional competition. Mr Bradley and Ms Anna are confident of their chances as they head off to Mornington next week.

Despite the positive start for many of our students, there have been a few unfortunate instances of inappropriate language and derogatory terms being used amongst the cohort and the students have been addressed directly that this will not be tolerated. Any student found to be using these derogatory slurs in the playground or the classroom will face immediate and proportional consequences, including the possibility of no longer being invited on the school camp in 4 weeks. These slurs include making fun of someone’s nationality, culture or sexual identity. We would appreciate your support in discussing this with your son or daughter and helping us remove this from the school.

After parent requests, please find the camp packing list below.

After a couple of problems last year, we would like to emphasise that you please do not send any lollies or additional snacks with your child to camp. This unfortunately led to some exclusion-like behaviour and theft last year, so we would please ask that you help us avoid this happening again. Some sweet treats and rewards will be provided by staff during the camp.

We also ask that you please not pack new clothes or make-up for your child. We unfortunately had a number of expensive clothing items destroyed over the course of the 5 days by mud and damp and expensive make-ups being damaged in bags and leaking. A small bottle of moisturiser is of course fine if your child needs it, but we ask that no cosmetic make-ups be brought. Any lollies or make-up found or reported will be confiscated and returned (or eaten) on return to school.

Student Report:

Hi, my name is Sai and I’m a leader in maths and karate. Hi, my name is Aaron and I’m a leader in sports.

This week in literacy we have been looking at a book called ‘Bindi’. It is a cultural narrative made up of different free verse poems. We started by predicting the story based off the front cover. Some of our predictions were correct. Bindi is an 11-year-old girl starting a new year at school. We have read the first 5 pages so far and based on the blurb, we predict that some things will go wrong, and Bindi will have to find a way to get past them.

This week some of us went to the basketball tournament. We went to Springers and played many other schools. It was a fun experience and both our teams played well, including a win from our girls’ team!

This week as a part of our Book Week celebrations, we got to watch a performance called “Maybe A Miracle”. It was about a brother and a sister who in the end learn how to be kind and understand one another. The three books involved in the performance were called “Country Town”, “The Concrete Garden”, and “Timeless”. We’d like to thank Miss Anna for organising the performance for the whole school to watch.

Term 3 learning:

Morpheme Magic:

Morpheme Magic will continue this term, focusing still on the Prefixes, Suffixes and Bases that help improve the maturity and complexity of their writing.

Literacy:

We will be shifting into the creative forms of poetry, with a number of author and style studies as well as plenty of opportunities to create and write their own.

Maths:

In Maths, the students will focus on how and why we use fractions, decimals and percentages, and how these can be used to calculate the values of whole numbers or how stores use these to put items on sale.
