Sustainability News
We have had such a busy fortnight in Sustainability!
Our Sustainability Reps and their friends were invited to a special workshop hosted by Year 10 students from East Doncaster Secondary College.
They set up a wonderful incursion in our Hall, and taught us all about waste and upcycling. It was so much fun.
Manningham Council lead a fantastic incursion at our school last Thursday called Sustainability and Environment Education Day (SEED).
Our Grade 3 students participated in 3 informative and fun activities - Biodiversity and Indigenous Plants, The Wonderful World of Waste, and Bushfoods and Cultural Artefacts.
We were so lucky to receive a new worm farm for our school, as well as a beautiful new garden near the chicken coop full of local indigenous plants.
We watched an interesting video about how the waste in each of our bins gets processed. This picture shows what a recycled bottle looks like (on the right) before it is blown up to its proper size like a balloon using hot air.
We also learned that even though you can buy different coloured biodegradable waste bags in the supermarket, the only ones that the FOGO places accept are the green ones. You can buy these from the council or Bunnings. This is because the workers only have a split second to pull out plastic items from the waste as it goes past them on the conveyor belt. An easier way is to not use a bag in your food scraps bucket at all - just wash it out every time, or line it with newspaper/paper towel.
Our Prep students have been learning all about minibeasts and Blue Banded Bees! We set up safe drinking “puddlers” for the butterflies, and found out about how the male Blue Banded Bees sleep together at night, all holding onto a stem with their mouths.
Grade 5 are busy learning about one of our favourite monotremes - the platypus. We are concerned that the platypuses in the Yarra River need more help to survive and thrive, as they face many challenges in our city.
Grade 6 did a lot of work to help the Grade 3s this week. They made a whole new garden bed!
