Around the Secondary Classes

The Queenborough Classic 2025

The Queenborough classic is an assessment task for all secondary Physical Education classes. The task involves each student running as far as they can in 12 minutes around the track at Lower Queenborough Oval, Sandy Bay. The task measures aerobic capacity, allowing students to understand what distance they are expected to be able to cover in 12 minutes to receive a Sound grade at the minimum.

The Australian Physical Activity guidelines recommend 5 - 17 year olds should complete at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity each day which increases the heart rate. Moderate to vigorous activity may include swimming, dancing, various sports or bike riding. It doesn't need to be 60 minutes continuously, it can be broken up into smaller sessions throughout the day. The guidelines also recommend that at least 3 days of activity should be vigorous, and also some muscles strengthening activities such as running, lifting weights or yoga. A recent study suggested that only 2% of 13-17 years olds in Australia are meeting the recommendations.

In secondary Physical Education lessons, students ran with the purpose of increasing their fitness in preparation for this assessment. They were either allocated a time with increasing length each lesson, or given a number of laps to complete in the session. The running sessions also helped improve aerobic capacity as part of each student’s preparation for the Cross Country carnival.

These were the top performers in each year level:

  • Year 7: Maeve Hosseini (2859m)

  • Year 8: Meg Stewart (2610m)

  • Year 9: Georgie Costello (2950m)

  • Year 10: Ella Nosworthy (2576m)

There were some excellent results recorded in each class and all students should be proud of their own individual achievements.

Science and Engineering Challenge 2025

Last week, our Year 9/10 STEM students participated in the Science and Engineering Challenge conducted by UTAS in conjunction with The University of Newcastle.

The Science and Engineering Challenge (the Challenge) is an outreach program aimed at changing student's perceptions of science and engineering. It involves a set of fun and competitive hands-on activities involving principles of science, engineering and technology. Through the Challenge, students experience aspects of these disciplines which they would not usually see in their school environment.

Participating schools have teams competing against each other and against the clock in eight different activities.

Our 2025 team came a close 4th place, with only a few points between 2nd and 4th places. The judges commended our team on their College Spirit, and were told that if it was the only criteria for judging, would have seen us take first place. How proud we are to hear that!
