The Kindergarten class of 2023 created Sally Seahorse from recycled materials.

Sally has recently been rehoused at The Sustainability Centre, Mt Nelson for all their visitors to admire and enjoy.

The Waste Hierarchy

We are asking our College community if you try to embrace the waste hierarchy and the actions at each level in an effort to reduce the waste we create?

The waste hierarchy is a framework that prioritises different approaches to managing waste, with waste prevention being the most desirable and disposal the least. It's often visualised as a pyramid, like in this image, with the most preferred methods at the top and the least preferred at the bottom

Here is a breakdown of the waste hierarchy:

Refuse and Reduce:

This is the most preferred method, aiming to minimize waste generation in the first place by rethinking product usage, designing more efficient systems, and avoiding unnecessary consumption.

Re-Use:

This involves using items multiple times for their original purpose or repurposing them for a new function.

Recycle:

This process involves reprocessing materials into new products, such as recycling paper, plastic, or metal.

Recover (Energy):

This involves using waste materials to generate energy, such as through incineration or anaerobic digestion.

Treat:

This step involves treating waste to reduce its volume or toxicity before disposal, such as composting or landfilling.

Dispose:

This is the least preferred method and involves discarding waste in a way that is environmentally responsible.
