Weekly Timetable
Whole School Assembly
This fortnight was very exciting for the grade 4 students as we were in charge of running the whole school assembly while the senior school students were participating in their Winter Sport Round Robin event. We were very proud of the way our students stepped up and did a fabulous job running both assemblies for the entire school!
Learning in Action
Literacy
This fortnight in Word Work, we completed our learning about Greek Numbers and the Latin base Strue/Struct meaning build. Students explored words including instructor (a person who builds knowledge within someone else), misconstrue (build an incorrect idea) and deconstruct (to undo a build). We have now moved onto Latin Numbers and comparing and contrasting them with our previously learnt Greek Numbers.
After completing our Literature unit on ‘The Arrival’ we spent last week exploring the features of maps and what maps can tell us about history in our Knowledge Rich unit. We looked at the ways ancient cultures including Babylonians, Pacific Islanders and the Aborigines used mapping in various ways including stone carvings, wayfaring with the stars and sharing landmarks through song and storytelling. We also explored how ancient maps of the world show us humanity's different understandings of the world throughout history and how modern technologies such as satellite imagery assist us with more accurate maps today.
This past week we began our Literature unit focussed on the poem ‘The Eagle’ by Alfred Lord Tennyson. The students have explored the language features and vocabulary in the poem and have used it as a base to revisit different sentence types (command, statement, explanation and question) in writing sessions.

Over the next fortnight we will complete our study of ‘The Eagle’ and move onto another poem ‘Who Has Seen the Wind?’. Following this, we will move onto a Knowledge Rich unit about different cultures in the lead up to Cultural Day in week 11.
Maths
Just a quick note to say that a lot of the upcoming strategies and concepts are going to start involving students thinking multiplicatively. We will have a high focus on multiplication in term 3, however it does cross over into other concepts. We have seen from daily reviews that many students are struggling with multiplication, it would be great if we can get your support at home to have the students begin practising their times tables. This will aid the students in maths for the rest of the year. We greatly appreciate your support on this.
In Maths this fortnight we have continued to work on our subtraction skills with the children learning and revising strategies including the split strategy, the jump strategy and the vertical algorithm to solve subtraction problems involving 2, 3 and 4 digit numbers. Some children have been extending their skills practising subtraction with decimals and even integers!
We also finalised our unit on graphing, with some of our students presenting their work at assembly last week. Their graphs displaying the temperature data from different cities around the world looked amazing!

Over the next fortnight we will be reviewing our work on addition and subtraction and applying our knowledge in a range of problem solving tasks and games, as well as beginning an applied unit on time.

Green Team Newsletter #2
The enthusiastic Green Team members from grades 3-6 continue to meet with Mrs Alexander and Mrs Stokol Wednesday lunchtimes. After checking in re how the yard cleaning roster is going, they share which areas of the yard are the cleanest as well as those that have more rubbish, and then make suggestions for improvements. Whether it’s helping to keep the school free of rubbish, looking after and developing the plants gardens, educating the school community about sustainability is high on the agenda and everyone has fabulous ideas.
The new initiative we’d recently introduced for the collection of 10c containers is doing well and we have raised over $30 in a few weeks! This involves the Green Team manning the collection bin out front of the canteen every lunch order day, as well as going to each classroom at the end of the week to gather those that have been put aside in specially labelled tubs. With everyone saving these containers on a daily basis, we are helping them from going to landfill and turning them into cash for the Green Team initiatives. Look out for the Sustainability display in the gym over the next few weeks.

It’s planting season, and what’s better than free plants?
Free plants can be gained by playing a game. Did you know that the Knox Environment Society (KES) provides prizes through a Nature Discover Passport ? Wouldn’t it be great if these were donated to our school for the Green Team to plant?
Head to one of the many reserves in Knox on the weekend to explore your local ecology. Find stamps, and collect prizes. And who says the fun is only for the kids? Head to the above hyperlinks to learn more.
Thank you, every little bit helps.
