Learning in Action
Literacy
Students began their new literature unit on the text, Finding Our Heart by Thomas Mayo. They have read the book multiple times, allowing them to delve deeper into understanding First Nations Peoples and their history, as well as the Statement From The Heart.
Students have begun planning and drafting a personal response/book report on Finding Our Heart. They are using a single paragraph outline (SPO) to support them in creating a topic sentence, supporting details and concluding sentence for each of their body paragraphs.
In sentence level writing, students have been reading and practising writing summary sentences by including only the most important details from a passage, such as who, what, where, when and why.
During Word Work, students have learnt about 'wa' and 'wha' spelling patterns where ‘a’ is making the sound /o/, as well as 'war' and 'whar' patterns where the ‘ar’ is making the sound /or/. They have also continued to broaden their understanding of homophones.

Next fortnight, students will continue exploring the text, Finding Our Heart and planning and drafting their personal response. They will also read other stories and informative texts related to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and their culture. Students will practise revising and elaborating during sentence level writing. In Word Work, they will look at the ie vs ei spelling pattern, followed by reading and spelling words where ‘o’ is making the sound /u/.
Maths
Students began learning about subtraction by brainstorming associated words including take away, difference, minus and less than, and explored that subtraction is taking parts away from a total. We revisited some of the strategies we had used in addition such as making friendly numbers and the jump strategy, and this week they were taught vertical subtraction with and without regrouping.
The Grade 3s also completed their location unit and proudly finished their maps of the school playground, which some students presented at assembly last Friday. Students enjoyed a session on Mass - hefting, estimating and then weighing objects in the classroom. The session on Area involved them estimating and then informally measuring books, tables, wall displays etc using their hands, sticky notes or tiles, and concluded with a game of Land Grab.

In the upcoming fortnight, students will continue to develop their skills in subtracting 3 digit numbers by regrouping the tens and hundreds. We will continue to use worded problems to practise their strategies. Capacity will be the next topic in applied maths and students will learn the formal measurements of mL and L and compare containers to estimate their capacity.
Wellbeing
For the past fortnight, students have worked on developing their communication and friendship building skills through ‘Ask and Pass’ activities. With prompts, students practised asking a friend different questions to begin a conversation. The students enjoyed speaking to different peers in their class and getting to know one another on a deeper level. During 4Rs, students looked at different personal strengths, such as Kindness, Leadership, Bravery, Honesty, and what each one means . Students thought about which personal strengths they believe that they show and which ones they might like to work on.

Over the next fortnight, students will explore what it means to be both kind and strong, and how these qualities can be shown in everyday life. They will create a heart craft, one side representing kindness and the other strength, where they’ll illustrate and write about the ways they can demonstrate these traits. The Grade 3 students will also take on the role of Kindness Ninjas, going on a special mission to spot and celebrate acts of kindness in the classroom and playground.
Updates from around the school
Green Team News:
The enthusiastic Green Team members from grades 3-6 continue to meet with Mrs Alexander and Mrs Stokol Wednesday lunchtimes. After checking in with how the yard cleaning roster is going, they share which areas of the yard are the cleanest as well as those that have more rubbish, and then make suggestions for improvements. Whether it’s helping to keep the school free of rubbish, or looking after and developing the plants and gardens, educating the school community about sustainability is high on the agenda and everyone has fabulous ideas.
The new initiative we’d recently introduced was the collection of 10c containers. It is doing well and we have raised over $30 in a few weeks! This involves the Green Team manning the collection bin out the front of the canteen every lunch order day, as well as going to each classroom at the end of the week to gather those that have been put aside in specially labelled tubs. With everyone saving these containers on a daily basis, we are helping them from going to landfill and turning them into cash for Green Team initiatives. Look out for the Sustainability display in the gym over the next few weeks.

It’s planting season, and what’s better than free plants?
Free plants can be gained by playing a game. Did you know that the Knox Environment Society (KES) provides prizes through a Nature Discover Passport ? Wouldn’t it be great if these were donated to our school for the Green Team to plant?
Head to one of the many reserves in Knox on the weekend to explore your local ecology. Find stamps, and collect prizes. And who says the fun is only for the kids? Head to the above hyperlinks to learn more.
Thank you, every little bit helps.
