Reconciliation Week Excursion

On Monday 26th the social Justice and Wellbeing Leaders Matilda, Catherine, Filipa, Sienna and Maddie had a chance to participate in an excursion to Monash City Council, to watch a smoking ceremony and a traditional dance. This helped us to understand Aboriginal culture more and learn more about them.

Smoking Ceremony:

The first event we participated in was the smoking ceremony. The ceremony was quite sacred with an Aboriginal leader, leading the ceremony for us. The aboriginal leader lit a fire while he said the acknowledgement of the country and talked about how precious and special this ritual is to him and his people. After he was finished talking, he added eucalyptus leaves into the fire to make it smokey. When he was ready he let us come up to the fire and cleanse ourselves with the smoke.

Traditional Dancing:

After the smoking ceremony we went and watched the Kalat dancers, performed by Karla, Skylar and Jamilla. We watched two of their traditional dances which were amazing and in our opinion was the best thing about this whole experience. The dance was very interesting because they used leaves in their dances and they had traditional body paint painted on their body. The dance was stunning watching them remembering all the moves to the song was remarkable. Once the traditional dances ended, we got a photo with the three dancers.
