Author Visit – Solli Rafael

On Wednesday 28 May we had the privilege of a visit from author, Solli Rafael.

Solli spoke to all our students, K – 6 and he was inspirational. Solli calls himself a poet, a writer and a presenter.  And he inspired everyone to think of themselves as the same.

Firstly, he spoke about identity and asked if there was an object that represented each of us. He says a pencil represents him, because he always wanted to be a writer. He said identity can be our appearance, how we speak and behave, what we enjoy, but it will also be linked to our thoughts, beliefs, ideas and feelings and who inspires us.  This can be expressed in poetry as we share our thoughts, feelings and what we might be passionate about.

He inspired us to write from the heart and with emotion and passion and to be creative in presentation.

He spoke about the structure of poetry but also the freedom of verse, rhythm and rhyme, or the choices that can be made and the desire to express thoughts, images and ideas in as little words as possible.

He shared the idea that poetry is like a window or a portal to our inner most thoughts.   We can look out a window – as we can share our poems with others, but poetry also allows others to look in on ourselves.

He also challenged us to look at our future self – trying to imagine what/who we might be.

Solli is only 20 years old, but his maturity is inspirational.  As a slam poet he is trying to encourage young people to take opportunities to share their thoughts, concerns and passions and to teach them that writing is a journey that we can all take.

Book Fair

We have nearly finished our Book Fair for 2025.  It has been a fantastic time so far.

On Friday each class came to complete their wish list.  This was great fun seeing the children’s eyes light up when they saw the books on display.

Monday was our Grandparent’s Day, and it was their turn to come to the library with their grandchildren to purchase books and other fun items.

Thank you to our generous grandparents and parents for buying so many books.  It was amazing to see so many grandparents coming to visit our library today.  And the delight and smiles on the faces of our children as they clutched their book/s, gifted to them from their grandparents.

On Tuesday each class came again and this time they were able to purchase the books they had chosen from their wish list.

It was very satisfying to see children leave with a book in their hand knowing they have the book they wanted and knowing it is theirs to keep.

Our book fair continues until tomorrow, Wednesday. If there are children who would still like to buy books or the other items we have for sale, please encourage them to come to the library anytime during the day.  Parents are also welcome to come. Cash or card payments are possible.

Grandparents Day and Book Fair

Thank you to every grandparent, parent, aunty, uncle, grand friend, and friends, who purchased a book/s for their grandchild.  Thank you to the families who also donated books to the library from the book fair. Your generosity is very much appreciated.

A love of reading is what we are trying to foster, and I think it is safe to say that reading is an activity that Roselea children and families are passionate about.
