Spotlight on Learning

Stage 1

Mathematics: Exploring Arrays and Multiplication

In mathematics, 2B students have been diving into the world of arrays and multiplication. We have been exploring how to form groups and understand the concept of multiplication through visual representations. By creating arrays, students are not only working on their problem-solving skills but also exploring how they can use multiplication in everyday situations.

Writing: Personal Recounts of Family Adventures

In writing, our focus has been on crafting personal recounts. Inspired by the beautiful books All Through the Year and A Year on Our Farm, students have been sharing their experiences and memories with their families throughout the different seasons of the year. From summer beach trips to cosy winter nights, 2B writers have been busy reflecting on their adventures. This activity has allowed 2B to appreciate the special moments that we share with our family.

Visual Arts: Salvador Dali Inspired Elephants

Our creative journey has also taken us into the realm of visual arts! Inspired by the artist Salvador Dali, we have been busy creating our own imaginative elephants. We have been using a variety of techniques, including drawing, painting, and incorporating our portraits, to bring their ideas to life.

Stage 2

This week, 3/4J has been fully engaged in a project where they are planning and designing a brochure on Canva to promote Deep Creek National Park. This activity not only allows them to explore the beauty of nature but also helps them develop their digital literacy skills. By incorporating various multi-modal features—such as images, text, and graphics—they are learning how to effectively capture the reader's attention and convey information persuasively. We are impressed by their innovative ideas and the effort they are putting into making their brochures stand out.

In mathematics, we have been delving into the concepts of coordinates and grid references, which are essential skills for mapping and navigation. 3/4J played a thrilling game of battleships that reinforced these concepts in a fun and interactive way. The students had a fantastic time strategizing their moves to outsmart Mrs Jones.

A highlight of our week was the visit from author Solli, who shared his experiences and insights about his books "Limelight" and "Spotlight." He encouraged our students to embrace their uniqueness and use their individual stories as a springboard for creative writing. This motivational session sparked their imaginations and provided them with valuable tools to express themselves through storytelling.

3/4J has continued its creative journey by collaborating on a video for our new Nature Nook play area. This project involved brainstorming new rules to ensure that all students can play safely and have fun in this space. The children were enthusiastic about contributing their ideas and demonstrating their responsibility towards their peers.

With the return of sunny weather, Stage 2 was thrilled to participate in their first winter PSSA game. While the PSSA students were away, the rest of Stage 2 enjoyed playing pickleball.

On Monday, 3/4J had the joy of inviting their grandparents and special friends into the classroom. The students loved interviewing them, learning about their lives, and creating special memories together.

It's been a week full of learning, laughter, and creativity and we are so proud of all that 3/4J has accomplished!

Stage 3

Over the year to date, K-6P students have had some great opportunities to develop their mathematical skills and understanding in the strand of Measurement and Space, solving problems and remembering to build on prior knowledge.

Each student works at a level which most suitably challenges them and they are presented with opportunities to demonstrate their understanding and when effective learning is occurring.

3-Dimensional Space - Jonas

“I made 3-dimensional models and arranged them from smallest to largest.”

Kester – “We investigated & explained the similarities and differences between pyramids and prisms.”

Mass - Johnny

“I estimated mass in kilograms, then I checked on a balance scale. I try my best to solve word problems about mass.”

Volume & Capacity – Abi & Jonas

“We made models and estimated which had the largest volume. We checked by counting the number of blocks used.”

“We also poured coloured water into containers and saw which container held more or less than another.”

Time - Tharan and Tharun

“We learnt about times at school or at home and talked about what happens at each time of the day.”

Angles – Kester

“We used our knowledge of intersecting lines to estimate angles, then checked our estimations, using a protractor.

Angles are used for designing bridges, creating maps, navigating ships and drawing perspective.”

Cartesian plane – Kester and Terry

“We use our knowledge of the Cartesian plane to read and map coordinates. We know that cinemas and GPS systems use Cartesian coordinates and they’re also used in robotics.”

We have a lot of laughs and fun learning new maths skills and we hope you do too!
