Principal Report

Dear Parents and Carers,

We are approaching the end of term, a longer one than usual. I can see that the students are still highly engaged with school, both their lessons and in the wider school community.

We are only a few weeks away from our school production. The students have been putting in lots of effort into their acts with the Ruccis team each Monday and Thursday. This is the final week of regular rehearsals. Next week will focus on any acts that need a little more time to get their performance right. Then Thursday 26th June is the big day. Students will be transported to George Wood Theatre for the day. Any students that have chosen to opt out of the production are encouraged to remain home that day with my blessing.

There are still some tickets available if you wish to expand and offer them beyond your immediate family. A recording will be available after the event for purchase if anyone is keen for a keepsake from the night.

How can you help?

We need you to make sure your child has the right clothing from home to complete their costumes and that you help students arrive on time at George Wood Theatre.

Please keep an eye out for last minute instructions from the teams.

Planned work at school

A few updates on work that is in the pipeline for before or through the holidays:

  • New signage has been fitted at the front of the school
  • Replacement mirrors in the boy's toilets
  • New seating benches for the canteen and Boorai building
  • Play equipment repaired and new mulch added
  • OSH Care carpet replaced
  • Rooms 5, 6, 7 carpet replaced
  • New felt boards added to rooms

In addition, we have been awarded a grant for repairs that could be up to $500,000 in valuation. This will focus on the essential building repairs and our leaky roof. I will share more on this in the future.

Council Traffic Project

I recently met with Yarra Council who would like to survey families about their experiences with travel to and from school. Their aim is to improve traffic flow for us all.

Access the survey here or through the QR code. You have until mid-July to share your thoughts.

As well as a QR code:

In the short term the council will add a traffic monitoring device at the front of the school so we can track average car speeds.

Change of staff member

We welcome Mykaela Oakley back from maternity leave for the start of Semester 2. Mykaela will replace Kylie Morrissey and will take over 34 Art on Tuesday and LOTE at P-2 level.

Kylie will still continue to be a casual replacement teacher and will join us several times during the year covering teacher leave. Thank you, Kylie, for your contribution to our school community in Semester 1.

Some items over the last few weeks that students have been involved in.

  • Premier's reading challenge - keep up the good work!
  • National Simultaneous Story Time
  • Attitude to Schools Survey - grades 4-6
  • Grades 34 visit to Quantum STEM centre
  • Grades 34 Hoop Time
  • Biggest Morning Tea for Cancer Council
  • Division Cross Country

Thank you to all those involved as a participant or organiser.

And lastly, thank you for supporting our recent curriculum day. The day happened on a Wednesday, so that we can spread out the days that students miss their specialist days across the year evenly. There are lots of public holidays on Mondays and we want to make sure everyone gets the right number of specialist days. The focus for staff was maths and multiplication. Most students will be learning this next term. The teachers and ES are all set to begin teaching this topic through a hands-on explicit approach. I cannot wait to see the results of their learning.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Best wishes,

Craig
