Sustainability in Action

LAUDATO SI WEEK
This week we are celebrating Laudato Si around the world. Laudato Si is a special letter written by Pope Francis in 2015 encouraging everyone to do their bit to take care of our planet Earth, “Our Common Home”. At John Paul II, we are following Pope Francis’s lead by growing lots of nutritious veggies, recycling soft plastics and other materials, and repurposing items like gumboots. Everyone in our school community is encouraged to do their bit to look after our planet.
PLANTING OUR WINTER CROPS
Over the past 2 weeks the students have been planting a range of Winter veggie crops into our gardens. We have planted garlic, broad beans, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, spring onions and parsley. The students have helped to dig over the garden beds, adding manure and mulch. There has been lots of good learning about plants and the benefits of growing our own veggies.
STRAWBERRY PLANTS FOR MOTHER’S DAY
Earlier this term students from Prep - Grade 6 planted strawberry plants into pots to give to their mums/special person for Mother’s Day. Over 200 hundred plants were planted using strawberry runner plants from our school gardens. We hope our mums enjoyed receiving these living gifts from our school gardens.
VOLUNTEER GARDEN HELPERS AT JOHN PAUL II
This week we had 3 volunteers helping in our school garden program. Special thanks to Stan Andrewartha (grandfather of Maddie & Aidan), Wendy Atkinson (grandmother of Feuree) and Sally (mother of Hugh) who are coming in every week/fortnight to help in our garden program. This allows us to have more students participating each week in our garden program.
If you can spare an hour or two each week or fortnight, please email me - luch.brighella@catholic.tas.edu.au
