Message from the International Coordinator and WELC Coordinator

WELC Update

The end of Term 2 is fast approaching  and WELC is preparing for 22 students to graduate our program. Over the next 3 weeks these students will participate in transition activities in WELC, choose subjects for next term and attend Transition days at their new schools.

They will also receive their graduation certificate at our Graduation Ceremony on the last day of term. We wish all our exiting students all the best in their new schools. We hope they continue to participate enthusiastically in all their classes and continue to try their best to improve their English skills as they move to mainstream schooling.

We currently have 58 students in our Language Centre over 5 classes. We expect many more students to arrive next term. With new student arriving, our classes will be rearranged and some students might go up to a higher class. We encourage students to try their very best over the next week or so as they complete their final writing pieces for each teacher as help us in the process of deciding classes for next term.

Many of our students are participating in weekly swimming classes at Monash University under the care of qualified swimming instructors. It has been wonderful to watch students’ confidence grow in the water and we are sure that these skills will help our students keep safe around water in the future.

This week is Australia’s official Refugee Week. At this time it’s good to think about the many different reasons and ways that people come to Australia. Some of our families have come to Australia through many difficult and dangerous circumstances and are beginning the process of settling in Australia and building their life in safety here. We hope that Westall can help them in this journey by being a safe, inclusive and supportive place. A group of students are organising a WELC activity for Week 10 to celebrate Refugee Week and give other students an insight into the experiences of a refugee’s journey to Australia.

As we approach the Term 2 holidays, we wish all students and families a very safe and happy holiday break. Stay warm and see you back in Term 3 on 21 July!

WELC Students Learn to Swim

This term, students from WELC have participated in a Learning to Swim Program held at Monash University. Supported by our Swimming in Schools funding, the program provides a valuable opportunity for our New Arrival students—many of whom have had limited experience with swimming—to develop essential water safety and swimming skills.

Students are grouped according to their ability levels, and each group is guided by skilled swimming coaches who tailor the lessons to suit the needs of the students. The program not only helps students gain confidence in the water but also equips them with life-long safety skills.

Our students have thoroughly enjoyed their weekly lessons and always look forward to the next session.

WELC ART ELECTIVE

During Art this term, students learned various art techniques, such as drawing, painting and printmaking, to create works of art. Throughout the term, the students demonstrated their artistic skills producing great artwork as shown below.

Students’ artwork is also on display in ‘A corridor’ near the WELC lockers.

International Student Program

As we wrap up a busy and fulfilling Term 2, we’re excited to share two heart-warming highlights from our International Student Program!

🎉 May Birthday Celebration

We came together to celebrate the birthdays of our wonderful international students born in May. The centre was filled with laughter, joy, and of course, cake! It was a cheerful moment where students took a break from their studies to relax, enjoy some treats, and feel special. These monthly celebrations are a great way for students to connect with one another and create a sense of belonging while studying away from home.

🏡 Annual Homestay Training Night

Our annual Homestay Training Night was a great success! It was wonderful to welcome our dedicated homestay providers to this once-a-year gathering. The evening included engaging activities and valuable discussions covering the key responsibilities and compliance requirements for hosting international students. We were especially pleased to see everyone actively participating and sharing experiences. It was a lovely event that not only reinforced our commitment to student welfare but also strengthened the sense of community among our homestay families.
