Super Teachers Defeat Brave Students in Thrilling Ultimate Frisbee Match

Yesterday, in cold and breezy conditions, the Teacher vs. Student Ultimate Frisbee match proved to be a great success in promoting sport and teamwork at Westall. The action-packed game was filled with flying discs, dramatic dives, and impressive displays of athleticism.

The brave student team was represented by Calvin, Jashanpreet, Yogi, Hakeem, and Christian—who all brought speed, spirit, and plenty of energy to the field. The teachers team, full of experience and strategy, included Mr. Tawala, Ms. Fisher, Mr. Udara, Mr. Chandrasegaran, Mr. Weston, and honorary team member Terrence Teariki (11V), who stepped in with skill and confidence.

Ultimate Frisbee, a game that looks like a mix between soccer and gridiron, requires players to throw and catch a frisbee with precision while adjusting to outdoor elements like wind. Yesterday’s conditions made that extra challenging—but all the more exciting!

The match was played over four intense 7-minute quarters. Players sprinted, leapt into the air, and executed impressive flicks, forehands, and backhand throws across the field. One of the standout moments came when Hakeem, known for his soccer goalkeeping, launched himself horizontally to stop a certain teacher goal in the end zone—a moment that had everyone cheering!

After a nail-biting 3–3 finish in regular time, the game was decided by a sudden-death shoot-off. With nerves of steel, the teachers edged out the students by landing the frisbee closest to the target.

Mr. Tawala was crowned the well-deserved MVP for his leadership and accurate long throws, while Yogi received the Rising Star Award for his determination and agility.

By the final whistle, everyone was exhausted but thrilled by the match. The sportsmanship, laughter, and competitive spirit made it an unforgettable lunchtime event—highlighting just how fun and dynamic Ultimate Frisbee can be.

Lastly, a shout out to the senior boys who endured the cold to sit in the stands and support the students towards victory.

Week 7

Inspiration at Karkarook

On Wednesday the 4th our school was involved in the Kingston Cross Country Carnival at Karkarook Park.   The day started with a slight chill in the air but the clouds were nowhere to be seen in the early morning.   Westall fielded that largest squad for many years and when the students arrived, they were amazed by the open expansive area of the public park, that was dominated by a large lake in the middle.  The three kilometres track was daunting, but the senior boys and year 10s had to run twice around for the five kilometre race.

There were a lot of first-time runners there, particularly the year 7s and the WELC students who were well represented.   The day started with the older students and finished with the 12/13s, and we all looked forward to their races with anticipation.  Every time they came around the first bend, we had small groups of students waiting for them to cheer them on for the remainder of the race. Our colours stood out.  It was inspirational to watch each child run the long way and to demonstrate a steely determination to finish the race.  It wasn’t easy, but they all made it.  As teachers we were so happy for all the students, because they achieved something very special and it meant a lot to each of them.

Mischa from year 11 was the first and only girl to run and she was first up.  We watched her disappear around the bend and bushes as she paced herself behind the other runners through the pathways and natural vegetation.  A lot of runners from schools like Mckinnnon and Mordialloc, Parkdale and Sandringham appeared first around the last opening and we all waited with baited breath as to the appearance of our runner in blue.   But Mischa came through and she was a smart runner, pacing herself and measuring her effort stride by stride.  We all cheered as she strode to the finish line.  She was strong and happy with her performance. Mr Kromlidis rewarded her with a medal for leading our school first and for an amazing performance.

Her run set the scene and gave everyone a lot of confidence.  It wasn’t too long before Westall tasted its first big success when Year 11 student Sameer Naeem ran a strong race to achieve a 14th place, which made him qualify for the Regional Cross Country.  The top 15 runners from each age group go through. Another highlight of the day was the inclusion of the largest contingent of WELC students in the school’s history.  There were 6. They included:   Yiming Pan, Sumire Ishizuka, Haruma Ishizuka,, Saeed Rezaee, Sara Rezaee and Viggo Takai. Yiming had the best result of 22nd, just missing out for the next round.

There was a real buzz of excitement as the races took off one after the other.  The events pushed every runner to their limits, and the determination on display was nothing short of inspiring. Whether at the front of the pack or digging deep to finish strong, every student gave it their all.

Adding to the atmosphere were the incredible supporters—our students lined the final stretch of the course, clapping, cheering, and calling out names to give their teammates that final boost to the finish line. It was a celebration of team spirit, grit, and school pride.

Among the 53 competitors, our Year 9s had the strongest turnout, with 13 qualifying for the event. Year 8s followed closely with 11 qualifiers, and our enthusiastic Year 7s had 7 students proudly wearing the Westall colours.

Congratulations to all who ran, and good luck to Sameer! The Southern Metro Regional Finals will be held on June 25th at Ballam Park, 260 Cranbourne Road, Frankston. Let’s continue to run with heart and support each other every step of the way.  I know that the whole school is looking forward to the next cross country race in 2026.

Week 6

May 29th

Rugby Roars Back!

For the first time in years, rugby returned to Westall, and it came back with a bang! Two boys’ teams—Under 16 and Under 18, took to the field in the NRL Rugby 9s tackle competition at Casey Fields. The students looked fierce in their brand-new Westall rugby tops and shorts, proudly representing the school in this fast, physical game.

Rugby 9s is no walk in the park—it’s all about tackling, endurance, and courage. Under the expert guidance of Mr McIntosh, who coached the boys tirelessly for three weeks, the teams were more than ready for the challenge. The Under 18 team secured a well-earned third place, a huge result for a school re-entering the rugby scene after so many years.

Although the Under 16 girls’ team was unfortunately unable to be entered due to numbers, the interest in rugby is clearly growing. And despite a few sore bodies after the tough matches, spirits were high, and the boys were proud to be part of Westall's rugby comeback story.

Senior Sport May 29th

Westall Lights Up the Field and Court – Soccer and Badminton Action!

On this action-packed day, Westall entered two exciting sports—boys' and girls' badminton and boys' soccer—with students proudly representing the school in both skill and spirit. Mr Pham was the coach of the badminton teams. Mr Kromlidis was the manager, with strong support from Year 12 student and assistant coach, Shahan Afzal.

At the heart of the soccer squad’s success was the leadership and organisation of Don Espino, who played a key role in assembling the team—from running selection sessions to managing equipment. He was ably supported by Lucas Nagliati, another dedicated organiser who helped bring everything together.

The soccer team competed at Caulfield Park, where the sun was shining and the grass was perfect for match play. From the first whistle, the boys brought energy and cohesion, playing with excellent teamwork and focus throughout the day. Shahan's presence on the side-lines was a gamechanger, his calm guidance, encouragement, and tactical insights earned the respect of every player, and his influence was felt both on and off the field.

In the early rounds, Westall took on Parkdale and McKinnon, two well-drilled sides. The matches were tight and competitive, with mutual respect shown between teams. Mike (Duc Minh Hoang) was immense in goals, facing wave after wave of attacking pressure and pulling off multiple crucial saves to keep Westall in the contest.

Through the middle, Shahab Ahmadi and Ali Aleadani showed outstanding control and footwork, often weaving through defenders and creating goal-scoring opportunities. They were electric in attack and constantly kept the opposition on edge.

At the back, Shafayat Rihan stood tall as a rock-solid defender. Time and again, he shut down opposition strikers and helped transition the ball out of danger. His leadership on the field was evident—offering advice, lifting spirits, and staying positive no matter the challenge.

Every player had their moment and got time on the pitch, and by the end of the day, the boys were a little weary but full of pride and smiles—especially after every goal, which was celebrated with pure joy.

A big thank you to all who played and supported, and congratulations to both our soccer and badminton teams for representing Westall with heart, effort, and sportsmanship.

M.V.P.

Shahab Ahmadi, Ali Aleadani and Jack Tran.

Rising Stars: Henry Pham

Week 5

Badminton Champions

Badminton Blitz in Kingston!

Over on the courts, Westall’s Intermediate Girls and Boys Badminton Teams delivered one of the most dominant performances of the year, defeating the best schools in the Kingston District—and they didn’t just win, they blew the opposition away.

The Intermediate Boys, led by the ever-reliable Hendrix, powered through the rounds with unmatched focus and teamwork. In the grand final, they faced their biggest rival, McKinnon, and delivered a commanding victory. After last year’s narrow defeat, the boys returned with a steely determination. Their extra training, strategy, and hunger to win made the difference, and it showed.

The Intermediate Girls were equally outstanding. Despite being one of the youngest teams in the draw, they showed maturity and grit beyond their years. Year 10 students, Sofia Ho and Muy Hour stood tall under pressure, guiding their team to the top of the group with sharp reflexes and cool-headed play.

It was a day to remember—whether running around the lake or smashing birdies on the court, Westall students showed that with heart, hustle, and support for one another, anything is possible.

Both teams will be playing at the Intermediate Regional Finals on July 25th.

M.V.P. was Sofia Ho and Rising Star was Hadia Rahimi in year 9.

Week 5

Senior Boys Step Up on the Netball Court

On Monday, May 19th, as part of the Alternative Sport program, Ms Donna’s Senior Boys Netball Team took to the courts at Sandringham Secondary College to compete against other boys' teams from the Kingston District.

It was a fantastic opportunity for the boys to showcase their skills in a fast-paced, high-energy environment. From sharp centre passes to clever intercepts, the team worked hard to execute slick passes and maintain strong court positioning. There were some impressive plays through the goal third, with quick feeds into the goal circle, and accurate shooting from our goal attack and goal shooter.

While the team had mixed results on the scoreboard, they demonstrated solid teamwork, great sportsmanship, and a growing understanding of netball tactics. Every player contributed—whether defending fiercely as goal defence or transitioning smoothly through the midcourt as wing attack.

It was a highly enjoyable day filled with action, learning, and some exciting passages of play. A great step forward for Westall’s netball boys!

Week 4

Intermediate Boys Soccer – Kingston Round Robin

On Thursday, May 15th, the Westall SC Intermediate Boys Soccer Team took to the field for the Kingston Division Round Robin, facing some of the top school teams in the region. With many opponents fielding squads full of club-level players, our boys knew the challenge would be tough—but they rose to the occasion with pride, passion, and relentless determination.

Despite a challenging draw, the team remained competitive all day, pushing every opponent to the limit. The results reflect just how close many of the games were, and every player should be extremely proud of what they accomplished together.

Match Results:

  • Game 1: Westall SC 1–2 Bentleigh SC (Bentleigh scored in the final minutes after a hard-fought match.)

  • Game 2: Westall SC 2–6 Parkdale SC (The boys never gave up, but Parkdale’s finishing power was clinical.)

  • Game 3: Westall SC 1–2 Beaumaris SC (Another close contest where we stayed in the game until the end.)

  • Mazen and Ferdaws brought creativity and energy when coming off the bench.

  • Sulo, Falah, and Harmanpreet were rock-solid in defence throughout the day.
